Denise Crosby's "wave" in SYMBIOSIS (1.22) ?

Is that all it is? No wonder I've never noticed it before. It's not what I'd call a wave. She could be reaching up for something or signalling to a crewman...

This debate raises an interesting question:

What is less professional, an injoke, or an appalling excuse for a script?

Denise Crosby's wave is probably one of the nicest things about 'Symbiosis.' Yes, she breaks character. Go back and watch that episode, however. Particularly her hackneyed out-of-the-blue speech to Wesley on drugs. That's front of centre manipulation, people. Wesley has a mother, a father figure (Picard) a guy he admires (Riker), and there's even a counselor. Any one of them would be more appropriate. This is the first time in the entire season he's spoken to Yar at any length, and because she's going to die next week, she gets to deliver a stitled speech about drug abuse.

That's far more out of character, in a cloying and sappy manner, and it's directly written into the script and the focus of a scene. The rest of the episode is weak and forgettable, mainly saved by the great season one weird lighting (which I've always loved) and the cheesy score (ditto).

Now, had this kind of thing happened in 'The Measure of a Man', I could see what someone's problem would be. But not here.

You know, in seeing it again (I pulled out my DVDs) I kind of wonder if she was even waving to "her fans" and not someone off camera out in the wings or something.

It still looks awkwards, it's breaking character but (yeah) still in an otherwise bad episode.

And while I doubt it's what prevented her from getting any jobs post-TNG it's still unprofessional (and can be expensive) to break character like that.

But Wesley asks anyone who happens to be on the bridge, and Yar is the only one of the bridge crew likely to have firsthand experience with drug use. She may not have a particularly compelling example -- depends how sympathetically you view her writing and acting -- but it's a logical thing to be an experience only she could share.

?

You've never seen blooper reels of every other ST cast member breaking character, every now and then, to make a joke?

Actors in main roles work incredibly long hours, often arriving when it's still dark, leaving when it's dark again, and you want them to stay professional at all times? ;)

It was the last take of her last scene in her last episode (having already filmed Tasha's death the previous week). Everyone on set probably waved back at her!

Denise Crosby had no idea the editors wouldn't notice the wave in that take, and use it - not realizing they needed to trim the scene early or use a different take.

She could've waited until the director said "Cut! That's a wrap on Denise Crosby!" And then she could walk around to the rest of the cast and say her goodbyes.

;)

And, yes, actors goof around a lot on the set for the sake of levity, dosen't make it any less costly or any less annoying to bean counters and directors. ;)

Is this thread a joke? I just watched the 'wave'. It's hardly noticeable, even if you watch for it. And people get upset about it? Come on... :guffaw:

Yeah the wave is barely noticeable unless you are staring your TV down looking at the background.

This is precisely the type of ocd anal retentive minutae that gives trek)kers) a bad name.
Je-heeeeeee-suz !
Get over it.

I just want to know if the wave is canon???????

(Just kidding. This thread seems wacky to me, too.) :)

No...the thread, started by me, is no joke.

Someone told me about the wave and I figured someone here could help me find out when it supposedly happened....and it turns out it did indeed happen.

No effort was made to turn it into an international incident.

I just wanted to know. :(

Thanks for making me feel the effort was worth it.

Or a good name for being able to enjoy funny little tidbits about our favorite shows.

Try a positive slant once in a while. You may find it's better for your digestion. ;)

Yeah, the wave lasted for about 2 seconds, and I'd never even noticed it before. Heard about it, never saw it until the video in this thread.

And the people going off about how it was expensive for her to ruin the take or whatever--give me a break. I've seen worse, even from other Trek actors, breaking character, blowing lines, not being able to keep a straight face through the umpteenth fucking take. It's not like she did something really expensive, like set her uniform on fire. :)
