So will we be able to watch the rest online?

That was the best episode of the series, IMHO. And they left us seriously hanging....

:scream:

^ Unlikely on ABC.com since you don't call something a finale and then show more episodes online. Maybe if someone knew of a way to watch CTV shows online.

So it's only natural we lose it with the best episode aired thus far. :scream:
Problem is it took the entire series to get there.
Agreed. This was the best episode so far. Some actual science fiction event on this interplanetary spacecraft.
The flashbacks are getting to be a bit much. Overused!
There was an action scene during an emergency. I think that was the first one really in the series. Good editing and directing for that scene I guess.
I had a great feeling like this is good SciFi on network TV about 3/4 into the episode.

I thought for a minute if Star Trek were to do a TV series with younger actors based on an Starfleet Academy as it has been discussed in detail they would probably go with something like this model of plot and pacing for a 43 minute length show. Flashbacks to training at the Academy. Half the show at Starfleet Academy and half on a ship or some planet's surface.

The pacing of Defying Gravity's first 8 episodes is almost as slow as Heroes season 1. That whole first season was just a buildup to season 2. Slow! Great character development though but that does not make a good television drama. I was so let down with Heroes that I just had to stop watching after season 1.
I've heard all the stuff about ABC not scheduling the rest of the episodes. They better not pull the plug now. I'm totally hooked and not just for another episode. I could watch 2-5 seasons of this show. Really. Would I pay to do it? Well my ongoing Netflix account will be sure to have them and I pay that every month.

OK so are there any plans to release this on DVD? Maybe we can get to see the missing final episodes that way ala Firefly. Better than nothing.

:scream:

I just wanna see selected excerpts. If they ever get to Venus, I am interested to see how it's depicted. I'll check back and see if any YouTube links have been posted...

Heroes was a runaway freight train compared with this show. Or maybe the difference is not the pacing but whether the events and characters depicted have any inherent interest whatsoever.

Well my ongoing Netflix account will be sure to have them and I pay that every month.
The show is already listed there in the saved section. Dunno if it has the full run of episodes but I don't see why it wouldn't.

The CW is picking up the rest of the series. Southern California beaches will double for Venus. Kristin Kreuk is the new Zoe and Marc Blucas is the new Maddux.

A CW approach would probably improve this show. It would be stupid and sleazy but at least it would be fun. :rommie:

But man oh man, why didn't they realize that they could have saved the show if they'd just thought to add a few vampires to the crew.

The pacing of Defying Gravity's first 8 episodes is almost as slow as Heroes season 1. That whole first season was just a buildup to season 2.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The original plan for Heroes was that each season would be an entirely separate story with different characters. The story in season 1 was not meant to be a buildup to anything except its own climax at the end of the season. Every main character had an arc that reached its conclusion by the end of the season. It worked extremely well as a self-contained story. Season 2 and everything since was an afterthought, an awkward attempt to carry on story and character arcs that were never designed to last more than one year.

Season 2 and everything since was an afterthought, an awkward attempt to carry on story and character arcs that were never designed to last more than one year.

Yet the premise is open-ended enough to accept more variation in storytelling than is true for most shows (compare it with the looming-expiration-date premises of Dexter and Sons of Anarchy), there was noticeable chemistry between many of the characters, and many of the characters were well acted or at least charismatic and pretty enough that they had locked in a loyal audience that only something catastrophic could drive away, such as several seasons of terrible writing.

At the end of S1, the show was beautifully situated for a long, successful run, and it still amazes me that Kring simply didn't know what to do? He was given a warehouse of gold coins and instead of spending it, he used it to play tiddly-winks. Amazing.

Yeah I'm bored talking about DG already. Let's start the Heroes bitchfest early! :rommie:

ABC REP: "DEFYING GRAVITY" NOT CANCELED
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC) LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- Let the speculation end: ABC's "Defying Gravity" is still very much alive.
Nicole Marostica, the show's publicist for the network, has confirmed the Alphabet hasn't pulled the plug on the show and is still mulling scheduling options going forward.
Due to its late start this summer, ABC didn't have the real estate to air all 13 installments from its first season. "Gravity's" shortened run was made clear from the start: the network announced back on July 22 (read the story), "Brothers & Sisters" would return to its Sunday, 10:00/9:00c slot on September 27, leaving "Gravity" just eight weeks of potential air dates.
This coming Sunday, ABC will air the 2005 feature "King Kong" rather than put originals against CBS's coverage of the Emmys.
"Gravity" nevertheless has been a lackluster performer at best - last night's airing drew just 2.52 million viewers (including a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49), making it the least-watched program on the four major networks.
No indication was given as to when the show will return.

Yes, best show so far. Finally some well deserved progress on the show, and the flashbacks (while still painful) were more tolerable.

I am very curious about what they will do about the Beta reveal and the Venus landings. Too bay we might have to rely on torrents to see the rest. But I hope the rest of the episodes will be aired somewhere on ABCs schedule. Because while I am generally opposed to torrent'ing - if a network drops a shop that is still in production, and no one else picks it up within a reasonable time - I have no problem searching for torrents.

ABC will air the final episodes next summer and call it season two. That way they can charge $50 for the aired episodes on DVD and call it season one.

Oh.... that's devious... But exactly what I'll do it I was in there shoes.

That's about what I expected. Since ABC didn't pay for production of this show, just bought the broadcast rights like a syndicated show, I figured they'd burn off all of it eventually even if it didn't stay in its initial time slot.

ABC doesn't own the series, so I doubt they have the DVD rights. 20th Century Fox is the US producing partner, so the rights probably lie with them. Whatever ABC does with the show is unlikely to affect its DVD release.

It depends on the contact, but I would imagine that as long as ABC holds the broadcast rights to those unaired episodes, 20th Century Fox won't be able to release them to DVD. Releasing them to DVD before airing diminishes the value of the property to ABC.

If 20thC Fox is in a hurry to get a R1 DVD release, and ABC doesn't release the episodes by canceling the series, Fox might decide on the split season themselves. But I doubt it. Most likely 20th C Fox will wait to release R1.

I voted excellent. Finally an episode with some forward momentum. True, we, the audience, didn't get to see Beta; but we know that will be up front the next episode.

Interesting tidbit - Nov. 5, 2052 is a Tuesday. Goss was going to wait until Nov. 5, the day after the election, to reveal Beta to the crew. We can conclude the election is not the United States Presidential Election (unless the Constitution is changed - Presidential Elections will be the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November every 4 years).

Of course, this begs the question as to why Goss couldn't adjust his own plans. He planned to reveal Beta on Nov. 5. The episode begins on Nov. 1 (the day after Halloween). That's only 4 days difference. Talk about unflexible.

The light/comm lag is really an ongoing nit. This episdoe wouldn't have worked had this bit of science been followed.

The flip-side though is I loved the radiation scare. A solar flare event is a major concern and any ship like the Antares will definitely need to include a storm cellar or shelter. A couple of Ben Bova's "Grand Tour" books include solar storms.

Really looking forward to seeing the "new season." I'll have to go find the BBC version in the meantime.

I liked the show overall, for all its pace.

When everyone's looking at Beta, or whatever, Jen isn't looking IN but looking at everyone else. What is she seeing or not seeing there?
