DeForest Kelley and 'Shore Leave'

I know Shore Leave was heavily re-written by Roddenberry at the last minute, but does anyone know what Rand's involvement would've been had she remained? Surely, Rand and McCoy would not have been an item?

Unless some writer was trying to establish a "love triangle" plot line??? Seems totally alien to me, but that could be a possible explanation (poorly conjectured on my part)
