DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

I haven't seen much bravado from Hal 2.0 so far...just idiocy. I have no clue why Johns has decided to write Hal like this it isn't different, it's just stupid....I liked him better in the DCU. :(

See...I disagree with that. Ryan Renyolds was not that much of an idiot. He was young and brash which is what Hal was in Secret Origin (which the later drafts of the script were re-written to reflect) and in his early years. To some extent we have got that Hal in "Justice League" but it seems from the two issues of "Green Lantern" that I've read so far (I don't plan on reading more) that Johns has had trouble maturing Hal five years. I don't see movie Hal in either New 52 version of Hal I've seen so far at all.

Of course, one could argue that when the previous title started, everyone was upset that Geoff Johns was pushing Hal as the ultimate, do-no-wrong, HERO (capitals intended). Now everyone's upset that he's portraying Hal as brash, impulsive, and a bit of a screw-up. In other words, it's the internet being the internet.

I have been enjoying Green Lantern Corps, but yes, it's lost something since the days of Kyle and Guy. With his last Green Lantern: Emerald Knights issue and the most recent issue, Tomasi seems more intent on creating the most badass GL's possible because, I guess he feels Guy always needs to be surrounded by ass-kickers. Really, though, what worked best was not to stick Guy in the midst of similar characters, but to complement his attitude with Kyle's softer, more sensitive side. Guy with other "Guy-like" characters just makes him one of many. With Kyle he was more unique.

^You nailed it, I think. I'm thinking back to Kyle's temporary death during Blackest Night, where Guy is straining against all hope to keep Kyle's ring from leaving. When he fails, he's so full of rage that a red ring finds him. That was an incredibly powerful and memorable moment, that rang perfectly true because we had seen the relationship between these two men grow. They had become like brothers. The most Guy and John ever do is bicker. They're not friends. They're co-workers, is all. I can see people bicker in plenty of comics, but I thought Guy and Kyle's relationship was something pretty special. Oh well, I'm pining for the past, I guess.

^
My favorite Guy and Kyle bit was actually right before Blackest Night, when the Guardians ordered the Alpha Lanterns to execute all of the prisoners in the Sciencells. Guy and Kyle orchestrating a protest was great. Both believed what the Guardians were doing was wrong, but, perhaps for different reasons. The way they complemented each other was great.

I enjoyed their partnership and friendship myself back then, then I've always liked Kyle. He was sort of my Green Lantern growing up. Hal had just become Parallax (or I guess become possessed now lol) when I started heavily reading DC.

Seriously, if JL were $3 (or rather, effectively $2, because I am patient), I'd still be buying it, no joke. It's so much better.

But then again liking a ridiculously bad portrayal of a character you hate isn't the usual standard for describing something as "good."

I'm one who really enjoyed the GL books for the past few years but I've been disenfranchised by the reboot. I liked the dynamic they had going with just GL and GLC now it seems like they're spread thin with GL, GLC, New Guardians, and Red Lanterns.

I've been reading and enjoying the new Swamp Thing title I seem to be the only one who didn't hate the outcome of Brightest Day bringing back a character that was effectively in limbo for the past few years.

What Snyder and Lemire did with Swamp Thing/Animal Man really has been a brilliant stroke with the Rot as a unifying enemy. Since they and their friends pretty much run all the dark books now. I think we can see a great line wide crossover in the future with books like I Vampire, Frankenstein, JLD, Demon Knights maybe even Resurrection Man. And it'll fit naturally given the nature of the Rot.

So Superboy #6 tomorrow has a crossover with Supergirl who has still only just landed on Earth, been kidnapped by humans after a short fight with her cousin (who I can only assume has been looking for her since right? :) ) and now confronts her cousin's clone who is also looking for him. Huh. I get they're building up to a big Supes-Family book event between the three of them, but how they've handled Kara's arrival and story has just been strange to me. She's supposedly only been on Earth for a few hours (well aside from the time she warped into space) and barely had time to adjust to learning of her home's destruction or that she has a cousin, and now she confronts her cousin's clone. Way to plot New 52.

^Maybe that's the point. That Supergirl has all this just dumped on her all at once. It is actually a neat direction to go with it. How the hell would someone deal with all that?

I'm not really complaining about the actual plot...perhaps that was the wrong word, it just seems off. Like I said...I get why they're doing this. It is indeed dumping things on a young person's shoulders and seeing how they're handle it. I think the writers have mentioned this in an interview. I just think the execution has been sloppy. Or maybe I'm actually feeling sorry for Kara and could care less about "Superboy"? LOL. I am enjoying the book some what. I like the new Kara.

Kill billions of smug, undeserving humans with your superpowers.

Or, at least leave Earth for a more advanced, less crummy world (I like how this is, afaik, never put forward as an option in any iteration of Supergirl; it's Earth or nothing, even though she could go to Rann, or Thanagar, or Orando, or, heck, Colu--they sort of owe Kryptonians in general, right?). This is how Adam Warlock did it. It was awesome. Well, for the reader. He whined most of the time.

I think, all things considered, the reboot GLC is stronger. While I loved what Tony Bedard did on R.E.B.E.L.S., his GLC was the weakest of the GL books pre-New 52.

And while I think "War of the Green Lanterns" was pretty-good, I thought the issues of the main Green Lantern book were their weakest between Blackest Night and "War of the Green Lanterns." I think the New 52 Green Lantern is a marked improvement over the "New Guardians" storyline that bridged BN and "WotGL."

GL and GLC were definitely weaker after Blackest Night. BN was clearly the climax of the Geoff Johns epic, but then he kept going anyway

In JLU she left present day earth for the more advanced, less crummy earth of the 30th century and joined the LSH. Proving, once again, that the Dini-Timmverse is the ultimate DC.

Kara historically has been a Legion member and been romantically involved with Brainy. The Threeboot version had it's title changed to Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes and eventually ended that volume (not saying it was Kara's fault...just was no longer Waid's book at the time I believe).
