DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

Three days to the conclusion of Batman Endgame! I'm so excited! I'm really dying to find out whether the Joker really is "The Pale Man" or not. I think I'm going to be very disappointed if he ISN'T, because this entire story seems to be predicated on it being true. On the other hand, if it's not true it would be much more consistent with the previous 75 years of stories :p

I'm actually looking forward and curious about the "TRUTH" arc. It should be interesting.

For me, what will be most interesting is if DC is actually prepared to deal with the consequences of this--or if it will be "fixed" by the end of the arc or shortly thereafter.

From what I've heard they are planning on dealing with this as a long term plot point...but who knows, maybe that will change by the time "Dawn of Justice" comes out next year.

I've always gotten the sense that the whole reason for removing Superman's marriage was to raise Wonder Woman's profile (as Kal-el's love interest). Lois Lane can't headline movies, so DC sees it as an easy trade-off.

That doesn't even make sense. The decision to pair them off came much later near the end of the first year of Nu52 and the actual WW writer at the time never even bothered writing in the pairing. If there was an actual plan and one of the reasons for the reboot, Azzarello never even bothering with it makes no sense.

People are actually upset by this?

I'm someone who loved the 90s/00s Clark/Lois marriage, so the thought that Lois would out Clark as Superman does make me a bit queasy. The 90s/00s Lois wouldn't do that.

Which leads to the "however." The current Lois isn't that Lois. Clark is, at best, a rival with whom she's somewhat friendly. I still want to see the execution of the reveal (it's already happened in the FCBD special), so I can make up my own mind about it.

I do find it interesting that Lex Luthor uncovered Batman's identity and decided against revealing it, realizing that there was a greater good at stake, while Lois (apparently, since we don't know the circumstances yet) uncovers Clark's identity and runs with it, possibly without considering the implications.

It makes sense that there would be a bit of a gap between the removal of the Lois/Clark marriage and the pairing-off of Kal-el and Wonder Woman. It would help alleviate back-lash from the fans.

Fair enough. I haven't read the WW comics, so I didn't know they never bothered with the pairing.

Yet Lois is Clark's love interest in "Man of Steel" and they got the high profile and Oscar nominated Amy Adams to portray her in the films, and Lois is going to play an important role in "Dawn of Justice" and most likely beyond as well. So I agree with House of UIster your comment makes no sense.

Azzy wanted to and basically did use Orion as Diana's love interest during his run and ignored what others were doing with Clark and Diana.

Makes sense to me that different versions of the character in different media would have different continuities and casts of supporting characters.

No it doesn't. Not when we have editors claiming they think fan backlash and outrage sells comics. Rather I think a lot of evidence points to the "success" of OMD/BND for Spider-Man which prompted DC to rethink and remove the marriage rather than any desire to do a WW/SM pairing or book.

As for Nu52 there is evidence that it was motivated largely by the demands of WB Corporate HQ wanting higher profits from the publication section of DCE.

That and Dan Didio saying the line of DC books before the reboot were crap.

Posters on CBR said that was one the main reason New 52 was created. Boost sales and revive drowning titles. Smart move IMO.

There's an argument to be made that the New 52 saved the comic book industry after the 2009 Great Recession. It brought people back into stores, retailers saw their sales go up across the board (since there were now more people in shops), and we've seen continual growth over the last four years.

The people at Marvel would disagree with that viewpoint, yet I'd argue that Marvel has actually benefitted from the New 52, because, again, more people came into shops, which meant there were more opportunities for retailers to sell customers on Marvel products. :)

The event also raised the profile of digital comics and specifically Comixology. I know that numbers are still scarce on this app but since you can use it to buy comics from anywhere in the world (something you can't really do in the print medium) my guess is that it is bringing in pretty decent revenue.

I was one of those people who got drawn back into comics by the New 52. At the time I was just getting one title (see if you can guess which one that is) and hadn't been a regular collector for almost 15 years. I decided to give the New 52 a try since it was fresh take on the DCU and I have steadily branched out since then. I'm now collecting books from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Boom!, Valiant, Image, IDW, and a few other random publishers when something interesting pops up.
