Spoilers DC's Legends of Tomorrow - Season 1

It's vaguely possible that Thomas got the official word from Degaton co-creator John Broome. Broome wasn't active in comics by that point, but Thomas was something of a fanboy himself.

I'm not sure why that matters at all. Just because the word didn't exist at the time the name was first used, that doesn't mean it doesn't rhyme with megaton (which did clearly exist when the fellow said it rhymed with it).

Because Per Degaton sounds like a unit of measurement in relation to another (unnamed) unit of measurement.

Dega is not a prefix currently in use, but I'd assume that a degaton is a very small or a very large measurement of time.

I don't think it was meant to sound like megaton myself, but that doesn't mean the guy who said it was had to have been lying just because the word "megaton" didn't exist when the character was first created. That's like saying that "frugal" can't sound anything like "Google" because Google (or even googol) wasn't around when the word was first coined.

I suppose a French name "DeGaton" could be stressed on the first syllable, like "Delacroix" would be, say. If it's French, though, it's odd to pair it with a Scandinavian first name.

Or maybe Broome just had a weird sense of character names and made it up at random and it just happened to correspond to those extant names. For what it's worth, one of his other creations was Eobard Thawne. But then, so were Wally West and Ralph Dibny (the Elongated Man).

Wikipedia says that (comics) Per Degaton calls 1941 his home, which means that it's possible that he might have been born in the 19th century, depending on if we think he looks older than 41.

That's a retcon by Roy Thomas, who made Degaton an assistant to the scientists in the "Time Trust" from an earlier JSA time travel story.

I never got the impression he was supposed to be that old anyway. He was probably supposed to be college age in '41...the guy was sweeping floors and washing test tubes for a living.

As far as his name goes...this was a guy who was using his real name as his villain name, so of course it had to sound strange and colorful. "Fred Schwartz" wasn't going to do the trick.

I did read the wiki.

There's not a lot of difference between 1941 and 1947.

I was only meaning that he is from the "present" and not from the distant future come back to screw over the past.

The whole abduction was useless if Degatron would still grow up to be a dictator. I wonder when Sara's going to find out Laurel is dead. The crew could try to go back to 2016 and vaporize Damien Dahrk.

Gideon couldn't look at the fluxing potential timelines to see what the result of kidnapping the kid was, until after they had kidnapped the kid.

Lets just call her near sighted.

If Merlin isn't part of the League, because it doesn't exist, The Undertaking isn't a thing, so he never sinks the Queens gambit.

Sarah is fine.

If the League doesn't exist, so many historical events that they influenced would be changed that the modern world would be unrecognizable and none of our characters may even have been born.

While the "League of Shadows" from the Nolanverse is somewhat different than the League of Assassins, take their example of "loading plague rats on trade ships." Can you image the profound changes in a Europe (where anywhere between 30-60% of the population was estimated to have been killed) where the Black Death didn't happen or was greatly reduced? Or lack of changes for that matter, since the Black Death was a catalyst for massive social and political upheaval that may not have happened otherwise.
