DC Universe Online goes free to play!

I'm enjoying it so far. I have a general game plan for most of my fights: there's an electric whip or something that draws people towards you with them stunned, then I use an Axe Kick, back away while they come out of the stun effect and keep throwing Shurikens. If they aren't defeated at that point, I hit them with Fear Gas, then get close in again and keep knocking them around.

I'm very curious to give the light powers from the "Fight the Light" DLC a try, but I don't want to purchase it until way down the road when I've gotten more time out of the fully free game play. Plus I'll still be playing Star Trek Online even after SW: The Old Republic is out, so it's not like I'm in any hurry to sink a lot of time and even a small amount of money into DCUO. There are just too many games I want to give a try, really; I've had Lord of the Rings Online installed for months, but barely did anything except get to the very first town as a Hobbit.

Yeah, exactly. I kind of see it as the evolution of a superhero :) Your character looks pretty badass btw.

Btw JD, I've been doing a number of missions which only have the instances left. I'm level 10 now, and I'll be caught up soon if you want to finish these up together next week. I've got Raven to rescue, and the HIVE base, and I'll likely be ready to do the Bane mission by then.
Cool. I got through the Bane, and HIVE missions the other day.

Thinking about giving this one a try since now it's f2p. Is there a way to get a Doctor Fate helmet for a magic user?

actually with the acrobatics, there's an upgrade that allows you to "fly" and lifts you up above buildings and such. there's another upgrade that allows you to use grapling lines to zip towards nearby buildings and up them much faster than climbing.

^Yeah, I've just levelled my villain up a bit and got the grapple and it's totally changed my opinion of acrobatics. Zipping straight up a skyscraper from street level is a lot of fun and it makes for a very quick getaway!

I think there's a rocket pack too that lets you "glide" for longer, so I'll be getting that too the next time I earn a skill point.

I still prefer flight as you can just get up to altitude, go supersonic and just wait (or play with the style options) until you're over the destination.

^9...I think. Might have been 10. Make sure you check the description as there's also a "grapple attack" which isn't the same thing.

9? I think I'm level 10, but I don't remember seeing anything of the sort. Problem is, they don't really do a great job of presenting you with new things to play with, so I could have easily missed it or picked something else without really realizing what I could be having. Also, not a big fan of the loadouts. As it is, I haven't even used them yet as they take a bit longer to get to.

Yeah, I really don't like how you basically have to spend points on powers you'll end up not using in order to get ones that you will. It'd be better if there were a smaller pool of powers that you spend points on to evolve into more powerful versions.

Something more along the lines of the Deus Ex or Mass Effect power trees.

Yeah, exactly. Not only that, but it seems they aren't exactly tailored to your type of hero, rather than being able to select from powers common to that fight style. Some of them I'd never use simply because they're not the type I'd be using in the first place.

That's kinda the point. Your powers are divided up into ones that are useful for staying in your damage role, known as the DPS role, and your support role, which is dictated by your power choice - Fire and Ice are Tanks, Nature and Sorcery are Healers, and Light, Mental and Gadgets are Controllers.

The whole point of the power trees is to choose the abilities that will maximise your effectiveness in your chosen role. You can choose to stay in DPS stance and just be the guy who deals out as much damage as possible, or you can run with the support role you were given at level 10 and learn how to play it by experimenting with the various powers.

It should be worth noting that the first 30 levels you're playing through now are effectively the game's tutorial. When you hit 30 and all the raids, duos and alerts open up, you have to make a choice about where you are going with the character, since the gear you'll be buying at that point is role specific, designed to increase the stats that are most useful for those roles.

Just had my first go at one of the PvP Legends wotsits since I have a bunch of them building up. Needless to say there were many cries of "stupid noop!" Excuse me for not being able to master a new character, power set, map and game mode in 20 seconds flat.

Not a huge fan on minmaxing myself. I prefer to adjust my character to my own style of play. I play for fun, not to study spreadsheets and stats. If that means I won't have fun at lv30, well then it's a good thing the game if F2P then. :p

Hehe yeah, I agree. Although I did have fun in that PVP mode. I even managed to kill someone who was pretty tough, though it is pretty amusing to see I whooped them. I have to say, the PVP is Arena is quite interesting as it throws in NPCs on both sides after awhile to keep things interesting.

Christ, really? How much tutorial is needed for such limited variation of gameplay?

It's not about studying spreadsheets and stats, but if you don't know your role, or how your powers interact and affect your role, then you're not going to be able to play effectively. Hack and slash and power spamming are only going to get you so far.

It's not about tutoring you in the basic gameplay mechanics. The game gives you 30 levels to figure out what you want to do with your character once you hit max level. That's plenty of time to play with your abilities, learn how to work with a team/play your role in the normal Alerts, earn cash and generally get to grips with the world before you start the harder stuff like Raids.

You guys don't actually think people have been subscribing to this game for 10 months so they can play it like a God of War type Hack n' Slash or something, do you?

Well, actually yeah. It's all in how the game presents itself overall as part of the game mechanics, which is more or less like a Streetfighter MMO. And honestly, I doubt that most people would play beyond level 30. Not everyone goes for that kind of gameplay.

Don't see the point in playing then if you're going to get to lvl30 then give up or start a new character just when the game starts to get good. At fresh lvl30 you've played about 20% of the actual game.

And no-one paid a monthly sub just to get a character up to 30 then rinse and repeat.

But isn't that exactly what an MMO becomes at that point? Loot, grind, rinse and repeat. I'd rather have fun while it lasts and move onto something else. After all, it's a game, not a lifestyle choice.

Well, people can have fun without going beyond 30. Isn't it the journey that counts?. The thing is that this is a pretty casual MMO and the stuff that happens beyond 30 seems to be a shift in play style that doesn't exactly fit with the casual attitude. Maybe you don't see the point, but not everyone is into the endgame content, and I see this happening not only with this, but other MMOs too. Not everyone likes the shift in focus that happens. Just because they don't want to do the endgame content doesn't mean they aren't enjoying the game. If you enjoy that content, more power to you.

I bet you that if there were a poll for any MMOs, or if any stats were available, it would show that most people don't stick around after the level cap. It takes a different kind of player for that.Which is also why you always have WoW expansion packs increasing the level cap. They want people to stick around.
