DC Universe Online goes free to play!

I think it would be cool if they gave players the chance to have their character appear in a DC comic in a small cameo role or background appearance. Maybe run a contest or challenge to win the opportunity.

I also wonder what the legalities involved in people making their own comics based of their DCUO characters would be.

^Sounds like a legal rights nightmare, so no. Even if it wasn't, I doubt any comic book publisher would "buy" a character based on some fan costume design. They pay their writers and design artists for that kind of thing.

Which leads to an interesting thought. Does anyone think all the fan designs of costumes out there are limiting what the comics company can do with the characters in fear of coming up with similar designs?

^I wouldn't be surprised if there's some clause in the game's ToS that protects DC from just such an occurrence. Indeed, since the player isn't actually "designing" a hero so much as picking and choosing between in game assets, it may be arguable that *all* possible combinations are the property of DC.

Let me know what you think when you get playing guys.

Maybe if we get enough people here playing we could set up a TrekBBS league or something. :D

Gonna download it to play with the character creator. My favorite part of superhero based games.

Edit to add: Well, I was going to give it a try, but they seem to be having server issues.

I've made a character and did the tutorial mission. The combat seems simple enough, but still fun. My character is a Green Lantern, of course.

Should we start up our own TrekBBS league?

Looks like they've ironed out the server bugs, for anyone who was waiting.

We have any legendary members around here that want to start up a league?

I played this a few hours and thought it to be pretty boring - I think I lack that part of the brain that responses to grinding.

There is actually very little grinding in Western MMO games...
Just by doing missions/quest and a little bit of mobbing you will pretty much always on the right level to tackle the next mission/quest...
Asian ones are pretty much grindfests...

Well I'd be super-bored with Asian games then! :p

Unless the missions/quests themselves feel to grindy.

One problem there is there are likely people on either the console version or the PC version and I think they use different servers.
