Spoilers DC TV Arrow/Flash Universe Crossover Discussion

Oh, you mean sort of like a "Doctor-lite" episode of Doctor Who, focusing on the companion(s) or guest stars?

I would totally be up for a Felicity-Cisco team-up episode. You don't even need a bad guy, just film them bantering for 40 minutes.

I'm hoping for a Felicity, Cisco, and Winn episode. It would be hysterical.

Also it would have been nice to see more Alex so what about Alex, Maggie and Caitlin. You can add Sara in there too and it would be like girl power.

Hopping in straight to the last page because TL;DR. Some thoughts:

This could have been condensed into a two-parter, but that not what they wanted. The Supergirl episode was really well-done (surprised, but Supergirl is my favorite of the four, as of it's S2 premiere), but so barely applicable to the overall story.

The Arrow episode was essentially filler. Half of the team is kidnapped at the end of Flash and all they do is escape without significantly advancing the story. The wife and I skipped season four of Arrow after its premier, and even though we watched the S5 premiere and this episode, we're not likely to hop back on.

The Story seemed to be a letdown. Too much time spent getting Kara out of action, the final battle was underwhelming. Let's all gather on a rooftop instead of blasting the heroes from our spaceships. The choreography of the actual fight made little sense. Watch Vixen engage elephant mode and then do a bunch of spin kicks, just like a real elephant, only to have a bunch of Dominators run right into her kicks. And another Dominator turns away from Ollie just so Ollie can shoot him in the back.

The topper is that they then proceed to call themselves Earth's Mightiest Heroes, an epithet long used by Marvel's Avengers, as if to congratulate themselves, or to say that they've accomplished something worthy of the Marvel films. It's very self-indulgent, and ridiculous. Berlanti and his folk are better than that.

@JRoss

The Arrow episode was the show's 100th episode and they tried to have it both ways, at the expense of the crossover.

As for Vixen, it was pointed out up thread that her kicks were likely the equivalent of being hit with an elephants trunk.

I figured about Vixen, but the movements were so un-elephant-like that it looked ridiculous. Tony Jaa did an elephant-inspired art in one of his films (can't remember the name), that was a lot cooler. But still, the aliens in the final battle look like they're running right into her kicks.

So when do we get the Wonder Twins?

The odd thing about the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" reference is that the JLA had their own such epithet on their covers back in the day: "The World's Greatest Super-Heroes!" Shoulda used that.

I think it was a deliberate wink at the Avengers, since after all this crossover was essentially the Berlantiverse's answer to the MCU's The Avengers -- the movie-size event that brought all the individual heroes together as a team for one epic battle against an alien invasion. (Which would make the ending of Supergirl: "Medusa" analogous to the post-credits teaser in Captain America: The First Avenger.)

And it was movie-sized, I've realized. Three episodes of 40-odd minutes each comes out to a bit over 2 hours. Although it did have a bigger digression in the middle than you'd normally get in a movie.

The "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" line made me think of this panel from Justice League International #11, from back in the day.

Has she ever moved like the animal she's accessing? She doesn't get on all fours and run like a cheetah, knuckle walk like a gorilla or flap her arms like a bird.

Nah, but a little something would be nice. Why have her invoke the animals if it doesn't seem to change her onscreen behavior?

As for the Earth's Mightiest Heroes thing, it struck me as self-congratulatory, and they didn't really earn it. Their accomplishments are certainly better than what DC puts in movie theaters and what Marvel puts on TV, but it showed none of the foresight and planning that goes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I just read it as a fun line

As for not earning it, they made an on-screen connected multiverse that now has over 200 episodes in little over 4 years. I think that's well worth some praise.

Why should it? She's using the elephant's strength not their behavior.

Still, it would be nice if she mimicked their body language some. I'm thinking of how kung fu has various animal-based forms that reflect how different types of animal move and strike. This is the basis for the various masters in Kung Fu Panda (Tigress, Monkey, Crane, Mantis, Viper), each one using the kung fu style associated with that particular animal. If the stunt choreographer incorporated that kind of style variation into Amaya's fight moves, it would be a more visually interesting and creative depiction of her various animal powers. As I said, I think they were trying that a bit here by having her use a lot of big kicks and spins suggesting the swinging of an elephant's trunk, but it's something I'd like to see more of.

And they could stand to use her powers in other ways, too. It's not just strength and senses. She should be able to fly by calling on bird powers, as we've seen her granddaughter do in animation. She should be able to call on a cheetah and run fast -- nowhere near Flash speed, but still fast. At the very least, they could make sure that her strength is commensurate with the animals she calls on. In the Western episode, she summoned gorilla strength and knocked down several of the villain's men -- but then they got up again to fight Mick. I'm sorry, but if they were knocked down with gorilla strength, they'd be lucky if they ever got up again.

Because I'm weird and I find this sort of thing amusing, I've updated my Arrowverse Viewing Order up through the Invasion! crossover. Feel free to check it out here.

As always, any suggestions or corrections would be appreciated. I've tried to match things up as best as I could, with episodes that take place immediately after the prior ones (as far as I could tell) in sequence so as not to break those up. For standalone episodes the viewing order mostly follows RL airdates, with Supergirl (airing Mondays) first and Legends of Tomorrow (airing Thursdays) last.

Cross-universe time disparity? Maybe some of the other episode are taking place concurrently with the Superman 2-parter?
