If your first big decision in charge of DC films is to say "I have no faith in people turning out for a Superman movie so I'd better stick all these other characters in there," you're not off to a good start.

Hey, remember how Gunn's The Suicide Squad was all about Javelin, Savant and Weasel?

I'm actually happy to be talked down from my concerns, because I so want this movie to be good.
Exactly. Fillon had small cameos or supporting roles in several GOTG films and in The Suicide Squad. I’d be surprised if his role here was anything more.
Given also the ages of Corenswet and Brosnahan, as compared to Nathan, I would hazard a guess that his Guy Gardener is just to show that the Green Lantern Corps exist in this universe; they’ll probably use a younger actor to play Hal Jordan or John Stewart in a future film.

I'm a big fan of Nathan Fillion so I'm pretty happy with his casting.
I am a little surprised to see other big name heroes in the movie, but I trust Gunn to know what he's doing. Despite what some people seem to think, it is possible for a movie to feature multiple heroes and still focus on the title character.

Wait, so you're saying I shouldn't freak out and assume the worst about every single piece of news for the next two years?
It is the nature of the beast (movies) and its source: the DCEU and MCU were created with the (partial) intention of producing a cinematic "world" or "universe", as the days of Rami / Norrington / Singer / Webb were over. In other words, after the DCEU and MCU, the new superhero movie model was going to hint at a larger world or drop representatives of said world in the film, because again, that's the nature of comics which people--even the non-initiated John and Jane Q. Public--are aware of.
Gunn has no choice (rather, Zaslav may not give him a choice) but to come out of the gates building the larger world, and after so many Superman solo films and TV episodes throughout history, one might argue that few want to see another solo film, whether its of the "..rocketed from another planet" variety, or a strict, "all alone in his freshmen year" type of story.
I'm not at all surprised about this news.
Just call me "few," then.
Still, I'm trying to accept the counsel of some of my favorite posters not to kneejerk overreact.

Yeah, it's a little less mealy-mouthed and equivocal than the "primary story" business.
I mean it's better that they're included in service to the film's own story rather than as setup for other films.

The Element Man is one of my favorite characters of all time, and I am thrilled he's finally getting some exposure on the big screen. Wow. Metamorpho.

That's open to interpretation as well.
There can be a secondary Jimmy Olsen story, or Ma and Pa Kent story, the villain story or anything peripheral but still important to the Superman and Lois story.
So we have the asshole hero, the violent hero, the freak/ outcast hero and Mr. Terrific who could slot into any or all of those in addition to being the brilliant hero.
Superman’s “legacy” will be teaching Guy to be less of an asshole, Hawkgirl to be less violent, teaching Rex that people will judge him by his actions not his looks, and whatever Mr. Terrific needs to be a better hero.
I hope this isn’t the film, but those characters are just an odd collection of characters with little connection to each other outside of Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific who were in the JSA.
Also, I still miss Superman being the first hero, even after all these decades.
