DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

So, they want an Aquaman-related horror movie instead of a random horror movie?! Why not?

Similar things have been done before. After '40s horror star Rondo Hatton played a villain called the Creeper in a 1944 Sherlock Holmes movie, Universal tried to spin him off into an independent Creeper film series (unconnected to the Holmes film since his character had died, but otherwise basically the same character), although he died after only two films had been made.

And it's not like the DC Universe hasn't always had a horror side -- Swamp Thing, the House of Mystery, Constantine, Lucifer, etc.

Well, it's not like they're just resting on all the other properties, they do have Joker, Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad, The Batman, Wonder Woman, Black Adam, and the SHAZAM! and Aquaman sequels coming up, have The Flash, Lobo, Green Lantern Corps, Blue Beetle, Supergirl, New Gods, and a bunch of others in active development, plus all those TV shows. So, they want an Aquaman-related horror movie instead of a random horror movie?! Why not?

DC would do well to streamline their production goals, and by that I mean really think about who really wants to see a Lobo film, or solo villain movies.Even a Blue Beetle film. They did well to keep the universe small in the early films, but as it it expands (whether still in the same world as WW and AM, or reboots), they need to focus on their next wave heavy hitters. Green Lantern, Supergirl, and the Flash. Get that started, and build the New Gods, threading i the background along the way (as its such an alien concept from the rest--even the Green Lanterns), and go off the rails with ideas that lack broader audience appeal. Lobo and Blue Beetle fall into that category.

^ I kinda feel you, but it's still more interesting than the Joker thing.
Nah. A Joker project with Scorsese attached to it is automatically more interesting than a vague idea based on an obscure setting almost no one had heard about (likely including half of whatever hardcore fans Aquaman has among comics readers) before the movie.

^^ *shrug* Guess I just don't give a crap about the Joker?

Update: After contacting sources in my mind, I can now confirm this.

Meh. No problem.
I think it’s an interesting idea. Rather than building an interconnected universe, like everyone else, doing something outside of the box. And they are smart keeping the budget relatively low.

A connected universe does have its advantages, though. I am committed to the DCEU at this point, and would perforce go see a movie about Jared Leto's Joker, though without any great enthusiasm -- not because of Leto, who was fine, but because W(ho)TF really cares about the Joker? The fact that this film is set outside the DCEU continuity, however, frees my Joker-indifferent self to blow it off with impunity.

Sure. Just as it has its limitations.

I don't know what committed means. I don't really care about that sort of "commitment." I see the movies I'm interested in seeing. Didn't see Suicide Squad, not interested, so, I have zero loyalty to Leto's Joker.

But, who the fuck cares about the Joker? I would argue lots of people as he seems to always appearing in comics. Or do you mean who cares about the Joker without Batman or some other hero?

Well... I am. At least, this movie has me very interested.

The fact that this film is set outside the DCEU continuity, however, frees my Joker-indifferent self to blow it off with impunity.

Great!

I mean, that's the ideal that going for a CU is meant to create, but just having a CU doesn't actually get you there for most people. I was quite positive after MoS, but I haven't seen a dceu movie in theaters since Wonder Woman and I haven't seen Aquaman or Shazam yet at all. If I wasn't a big superhero nerd to begin I would probably never watch Aquaman. And if they ever make that Ezra Miller Flash movie, odds are I won't see that till it hits streaming, either.

Hell, even the MCU which at this point has become simply must see for me, still took a long time to get there. I waited for video on IM3 and Thor 2. I skipped Winter Soldier to avoid giving the theater 3D showing money (this was before I gave up fighting the 3D obsession). I nearly skipped Guardians 1. I had absolutely decided to skip Ant-man before I happened to find myself stuck near a theater for a whole afternoon with nothing else to do. And I strongly considered skipping Dr. Strange and Spider-man Homecoming. It took the regret of missing out on Winter Soldier for months, combined with the incredible cinema experiences of Guardians and Spider-man that I nearly missed to finally make me say 'Ok, from now on I'll just watch every MCU movie whether I think it sounds good or not'.

Because at the end of the day, as fun as it is to see stuff go back and forth, we all know full well that missing Ant-man will not ruin your experience at the next Avengers movie.

I'm not proud that I'd see a movie starring Leto's Joker, but I'm a slave to corporate branding.

In saying who cares about the Joker, I mean that in the abstract. I'm well aware there are those who do. He's just not my bag. I mean, he's an OK villain, but I don't find him actively interesting.

To grendelsbayne: You should definitely check out Aquaman and Shazam! purely on their own merits. They're both tons of fun.

They only showed it in 3D?

Back then, they showed everything exclusively in 3d if they could get away with it. Or maybe there would be 1 or 2 showings in the first week or so in 2d at the most inconvenient possible times. It is a small theater, to be fair, there was more choice at the next town over but that's a rather large added cost in both money and time to get there.

They've gotten a bit better since then, but the 2d showings are still more likely than not to be at inconvenient times.

Break the chains, man.

I'm interested in how they pull it off. It looks super intriguing to me and not the same old same old thing we've been getting for the most part for years.

They are both fun. But, Aquaman, the movie, is super schlocky at times. Like... really dumb things happen... *looking at that girl who offers a book to Mera and Arthur so they can pay off a pointless joke, that gets contradicted in the very next scene*

BUT, it was one of those, see it on the big screen things.

As a solo movie character, I can agree with that. I've never been a fan of solo villain stories, even in comics, as they serve their best purpose opposing the hero. It reminds me of all things Boba Fett...why should anyone care about him outside of being the "mystery man" recipient of Vader capturing Han Solo? The Joker has a longer, more involved history than Fett, but I still do not have an interest in knowing the minutiae of all things Joker other than in the form of light exposition in a Batman production.

Oh, I try to check out every superhero movie I can. It's just a question of when I'm willing to put money towards one or not. If tomorrow Netflix added Halle Berry's Catwoman and Trank's Fant4stic, I'd happily watch them both out of curiousity - but they're so infamous that Netflix doesn't want them and the library never had them, so I've never seen them.

Aquaman is already on my library reservations list, but it's new so in demand. I hope it will be fun, but I really didn't like Momoa in Justice League. In fairness to him, I barely even liked Gal Gadot in Justice League and she's delightful.

I'll borrow Shazam when it comes out, too. In fact I almost considered going to Shazam on the strength of the trailers but... WB's track record combined with my total lack of interest in the character and the actor held me back. After all, Suicide Squad's trailers were incredible, but the movie was really only salvageable thanks to a great actess playing one of my favorite dc characters.
