DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

Matt Reeves talks a bit about his 'noir Batman' in an interview:

So, Batman. Tell us about your take.

It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It's more Batman in his detective mode than we've seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He's supposed to be the world's greatest detective, and that's not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I'd love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it's going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.

Do you have a title yet?

(Laughs.) Right now it’s called The Batman. What it will be called ultimately, I don’t know.

Have you begun the casting process?

There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We're starting to put together our battle plan. I'm doing another pass on the script and we'll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.

What's your goal as far as a release date?

We haven't been dated. I wouldn't commit to this, but we're thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.

How involved are you with the other films in the DC universe, be it Harley Quinn or Batgirl?

Right now, I'm involved in The Batman. What it will be called ultimately, I don't know. Aquaman is going to be very different from the Todd Phillips Joker movie, and that's going to be different from Shazam and Harley Quinn. Warners believes they don't have to try to develop a giant slate that has to have all the plans for how it's going to connect. What they need to try and do is make good movies with these characters.

I wonder when that interview occurred? He talks about Aquaman like it’s not out yet. Minor detail, maybe he was misquoted. If this was not newly posted by Hollywood Reporter the actual content is not much different more previous vague descriptions he has made.

I do like what Reeves is saying about Noir. Previous films have been too fixated on Batman as the ultimate fighter or Batman as a symbol. Or some combination of the two. That Batman the detective has been mostly ignored.

Considering it’s a young Batman earlier in his career no reason they need Affleck. I would be ok if they use him. But no reason they need to disregard what has been established with him given it’s so far removed in time in Bruce’s life.

And for those not wishing to pause the video every half a second to get a better look, here's the people in it :techman:

Poor Ewan McGregor. The guy is a way better actor then the roles he takes would have you believe. Well, at least now he can say that Attack of the Clones isn't the worst film he's been a part of. Of the SW Prequel actors who have been in superhero films, he's certainly gotten the short end of the stick.

I get so giddy when I see a new kirk post, and it's almost never disappointing, though getting quite repetitive.

I hope they get The Batman right. I'm definitely ok with his detective side, but hope they don't skimp on the action part. They can't lose what makes Batman Batman.

What I would like to see is this movie tie into the DC movie universe, but NOT be a prequel. I don't think Batman has to be older in the Justice League era. I think he should be around the same age as Superman and Wonder Woman (at least the age she appears to be). I want a Batman in his absolute prime.

As for Suicide Squad, the idea of a movie with C list villains never appealed to me. I think before they go that route, they should get the A list heroes right first, which they haven't done.

They're being so sensationalist over Affleck, when odds are he's just not doing this film because it's when the character was younger.

So you honestly think we'll see Affleck in a starring Batman role again? I can see maybe a fun cameo in a future WW or Aquaman movie, but otherwise he's done. I would bet lots of money on that.

Anything is possible. They could have Affleck return in a present day film. But part of the appeal to him and WB was to have him, an Oscar winner, write and direct a Batman film. That did not happen. Will they make that offer again? He is certain to cost more than whomever the new guy is. Lots of factors that could affect how this all goes.

Pure speculation. If the new Batman movie is close to the beginning of his “career”, there’s no reason why it could not link up with a “present day” Affleck movie in a few years (maybe a “pass the torch” to a Damian Wayne moment, for example). It could even be several “younger Batman” films. Depends on whether anyone feels like linking them up (loosely, of course, allowing for contingencies).

I like Affleck as Batman, so I’d like to see more, but I’m also curious about this new direction.
