DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

DC's own online convention is coming:

Not quite sure what to make of it. Is it going to be some kind of VR thing, or is it going to be panels per Zoom like all the other online cons.

Sidebar: That voice at the end there, was that Aisha Tyler?

Seems a little cruel to use the orignal Superman film theme with no Superman movie what so ever being development.
Maybe that is going to change.....or maybe it won't be a movie but a series linked to a movie that uses the superman theme.

Or they just picked one of the most recognizable themes on the planet that happens to be the theme to the character they own that will be discussed during the convention one way or another. Even outside of a new movie, he's sort of popular.

Well, what other theme would represent the entire history/legacy of DC superheroes onscreen?

(But strictly speaking, the original Superman film theme was composed by Sammy Timberg in 1941 for the Fleischer theatrical shorts. John Williams's theme was a pastiche of it and of Leon Klatzkin's similar theme from the George Reeves TV series.)

I disagree. There was humor aplenty, but nothing moving towards the ridiculous...not until Superman II, at least.

The black pimp stereotype (in appearance, behavior and dialogue) was not only ridiculous, but offensive back in 1978. The most prominent black male of any note in the film, and he's a criminal. Then, there's the little girl, who tells her mother about meeting a flying man, and the reaction? "Haven't I told you to stop telling lies?" followed by the sound of a slap. It was played as humorous. Slapping a child was not funny.

Hackman was responsible for the way he portrayed Luthor. IIRC he thought that Luthor was too dry and dull as written so he proposed the new take on the character's attitude to make it more entertaining. I don't think that explains the level of "camp" in the movie, but it certainly explains Hackman's take on the character. Hell, when I was a child I knew that the movie didn't portray Luthor as he was supposed to be.

Hackman's Luthor was one of the best things about the Donner film, as he tried to add color and a feeling that there was something behind his desire for power, but Otis was a frequent distraction and made no sense: why would someone as intelligent, detail-oriented, secretive (until he tries to trap Superman) and ambitious as Luthor rely almost exclusively on a simpleton? One might write it off as "the absurdity of the subject" but even non-comedic fantasy has to play it straight enough for the conflict to sell.

There's Superman & Lois series coming out next year and a Justice League movie (or more likely also series), so...

You think there could be a Justice League SERIES?

Done right, it could be awesome, but I think HBO Max needs to do something like that. Perhaps a Superman series with Routh on HBO Max.

It's just going to be another digital convention with Zoom panels. They've been talking about it quite a bit over the last few weeks.
Here's the DC page with a overview of what it's going to be.

The black pimp [...] Slapping a child
Black pimps exist. Children getting slapped exists. Just because you find these things offensive doesn't equal the film dipping into ridiculousness.

Though it arguably does approach farce due to Otis.

Black pimps exist.

Its a racist stereotype in film, particularly when he's the only black male of any presence with dialogue in the film.

Children getting slapped exists.

Children being slapped is not funny--and that's how the film sold that--as a joke. It was tasteless in 1978 and will always remain tasteless

Just because you find these things offensive doesn't equal the film dipping into ridiculousness.

Though it arguably does approach farce due to Otis.

Both characters stain the film, and to top it off, both are tied to interactions with the main character, so they cannot be swept under the carpet.

Yeah, I think you're arguing something different to me. You quoted me talking about the ridiculousness levels but that's seemingly not actually what your beef is. (Or if it is, we seem to be aiming past each other.)

Anyway, not sweeping anything. Just don't care that there is a black pimp and a slapped child (possibly pimp-slapped, but cannot confirm) in the movie.

Exactly one year away from theatrical release, should theaters exist then that is... :shifty:

Shortly after Crisis a Routh HBO MAX mini was rumoured... is it too much to hope?

It would be interesting. I recently discovered the Harley Quinn cartoon, currently on HBO Max. I know it started on the DC streaming service but I'm floored by it - in a good way. It's not as good as the Timm universe, but it's fresh and different, and humorous.

Most important, it's not restricted. A Superman series that is not restricted could be amazing. Ultimately, my perfect series would be a live version on the level and tone of the 90s cartoon. Routh channels Reeve pretty well himself, and it would be fun to see a really well written version of the character.
