He was one of the leads in 2016's "War and Peace" mini with Lily James.

FINALLY! The Great One is getting the movie made after what feels like 15 years,
I hope he lays the Smackdown on all those candy asses. Let’s make this the second Billy that he buries.

It did what now?! A movie made for $ 100 million and made $ 364.5 million at the box office (plus another $ 30+ million in physical home media) lost money? Would you care to elaborate on that?

Anyway, a direct sequel has been announced with not only the cast but also the writer and director returning.

Yeah, for some reason a narrative has sprung up with people wanting to paint Shazam! as a flop, but it wasn't.

That should be "Profit is double your budget in the US or quadruple overseas". Because the "and" makes it seem like not only does a movie need to do double its budget in the US, it also needs to quadruble it overseas, and barely any movie does that. Quick rule is triple the budget worldwide. Mark Hughes of Forbes.com wrote that this movie specifically needed to make $ 235-250 million to break even (including marketing costs), and it made 364.5 million by the end of its theatrical run.
So, no, your claim that the movie lost money is incorrect.

Shame it didn’t do better. It was easily the better of the Captain Marvel movies this year.

While it wasn't a small-budget-huge-hit like a lot of people might have expected based on Deadpool and Venom, it was really not to be expected. Those were big surprise hits. SHAZAM! wasn't as big as them, but it was a success. Given that, the critical acclaim and positive audience response it got, plus the interest one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and it shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that there will be a sequel.

Not surprising to see Black Adam finally getting the greenlight. With Joker making mad money and DC's tendency to quickly steer into a skid, it makes sense.

I do hope for a Shazam sequel too. It's the only DCEU movie so far I actually completely enjoyed.

Perhaps not a flop, but, the talk of a 100 million dollar budget leaves out the advertising campaign which can cost as much as the production budget.

So, it may have only made 100 million dollars, world wide. And that's the box office, but that's not necessarily what came back to the studio. Overseas percentage of returns is less than domestic.

And yes, to us mere mortals, that's a lot of money. But, it's not what studios are looking for in a return. Shazam made less than the Ant-Man movies and those are considered less successful in the MCU.

Perhaps not a flop, but, not exactly a success story either.

One way to give your decent-but-not-quite-a-blockbuster film's sequel a boost is to have Dwayne Johnson, currently the most bankable star in Hollywood, costar. Shazam vs. Black Adam, anyone?

I REALLY think that is what they was originally going to do, but decided to make Black Adam his own...and grafted in Sivana to fill that role. I mean...they could have done a Mummy/Scorpion King and have a visible Rock/Black Adam flashback to set up the Black Adam movie

Um, by THAT logic "Avengers: Endgame" (and every Marvel and DC movie made to date) lost money.

    Times have changed.

Hollywood accounting can make any movie lose money. See David Prowse receiving residuals from ROTJ. He was constantly being told the movie hadn't made any money yet.

I’m pretty sure I saw Ed Solomon, writer of MIB, comment wryly recently on twitter that it’s a shame that the first movie still hasn’t made a profit.
