DC Comics: Rebirth

That's too funny! But what made the early 80s Legion great was that it was one of the first DC comics to run a truly serialized story. Relationships and subplots ran through multiple issues and years, and often subplots became major turning points after years in the making. It was a truly fine use of the comic book form.

The problem is, that can also be its downfall. Any title is going to see readership erode over time. However, most titles can easily pick up readers and have natural starting points, especially back when comics were more episodic.

The biggest complaint I've heard about the Legion is that it is difficult to jump into because of those dense story lines. The constant reboots don't help. That being said, at this point, they, at least, have to to do a soft reboot, since (a) the characters have been languishing for years and (b) the last time they had a title, Levitz was at the helm and his storytelling is pretty dense with various subplots running through everything.

A reboot would also let them pare the number of Legionnaires down to a respectable number and slowly add on from there. I can see how it's intimidating to start a comic, even a soft/hard reboot with a roster of 10+ heroes.

Personally, I started in the mid-90's in the final years of the "Five Years Later" story line and it was the sister title, Legionnaires, which at that time featured a younger version of the team that were either clones or time-displaced versions. I did hunt down back issues and got the first arc of the early 80's series, the story arc where Karate Kid died.

I was on-board for the Zero Hour reboot and thought they had a good handle on things. They told their own stories, with a nudge-nudge-wink-wink attitude towards previous continuity. They really didn't re-do story lines, if they could help it, and when they did, like introducing the Fatal Five, they put their own spin on it. Something with that sensibility might work. Though I imagine they'll do something more like what the Supergirl TV series is doing. I get it, but as a Legion fan, I'm doing my best not to scream at some of the changes (Imra is blonde! She's in love/married to Garth! Where is Garth? Brainiac 5 isn't a cyborg and he's green, not bluish purpble!).

And the last arc of the most recent series ended pretty disastrously with Sun Boy beheaded and eaten almost as a side note to the main story IIRC. I agree with what you're saying--also that version of the Legion doesn't really fit in the current schema of the DCU.

A reboot with the Legion starting off a little smaller would work well I think.

Guess what's back?
Back again.
Trunks are back.
Tell a friend.

Thank goodness it’s for one issue only!

Also, we’re now on page 52! Coincidence? I think not!

Doomsday Clock has Bern switched to bi-monthly.

Seems like producing 32 pages a month while also still working to complete the third volume of Batman: Earth One is too much for Gary Frank. Understandibly, and I rather wait longer inbetween issues than have a different artist filling in.
I don't suppose any of this is to do with the fact that SUperman is getting his 'proper' costume back and Gary Frank has to rejig all his Superman images?

That might factor into it, but the main reason is probably the demand of 32 pages per issue. If it was just Frank having to do some corrections to Superman's hip section in already produced pages, a few weeks delay of the next issue would suffice.

Scott Snyder to Write Flagship Justice League Series Post-Metal

I can't say I am excited about t his. I was a fan of Snyder’s New 52 run on Batman, but I have not been enjoying Metal that much. A few of the one-shots were ok, but I really don't care for the main series. The fact that they will be following up on Metal in Justice League does not fill me with confidence that I will enjoy Snyder's run on JL.

It goes even further.

CBR| DC Comics Unveils Post-Metal Justice League Plans

CBR said:
As revealed first on IGN, the conclusion of Metal will lead to a four-issue weekly miniseries running through May titled Justice League: No Justice, co-written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV and Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Francis Manapul. No Justice will launch a new slate of Justice League comics — details on those are currently unclear beyond Snyder writing the flagship, and Tynion and Williamson also both writing books. No artists have been announced for the post-No Justice series.
...

Justice League: No Justice will see Brainiac advising the Justice League to form four separate teams based on skill to counter a “a cosmic-level threat on the way to destroy Earth.” These teams, which combine iconic heroes and plenty of well-known villains, are Team Mystery: Martian Manhunter, Sinestro, Superman, Starfire and Starro; Team Entropy: Lobo, Lex Luthor, Beast Boy, Batman and Deathstroke; Team Wonder: Raven, Doctor Fate, Zatanna, Wonder Woman and Etrigan the Demon; and Team Wisdom: Cyborg, Harley Quinn, Atom, The Flash and Robin (specified as Damian Wayne).

So, uh, ... I'm thrilled about J'onn returning, especially to the, well, a Justice League, but ... four different teams?! I hope their books won't all be twice-monthly, because that'd be hard on my wallet. But also, ... I'm sorry, but all those villains on JL teams feels wrong. I mean, Lex Luthor has been ambivalent for some time now (and was a member of a previous League), but Sinestro, Starro, and Harley Quinn?! Lobo has been a stretch in the JLA, even though it's fun.

The two current League titles will end for this. Which is a shame, because Priest and Orlando have done really good, but then again, good for my wallet.

Still, this whole thing feels weird. Like the overkill the Avengers have been going through for some years now.

Oh, so the only good Justice League book published since 2009, Justice League of America, is being cancelled so my most hated Batman writer can shit all over the entire concept. Plus, from now on fucking Damien Wayne will be listed as a Justice League member. Fuck Scott Snyder, and fuck this. I'm not reading Metal (which seems like a good thing, since most of the reviews make it seem like crap) and it looks like I won't be reading any JL book fairly soon. Its like when that hack Johnathon Hickman ruined ever Avengers book for years, except worse because at least Hickman put out one or two good books before he totally shit the bed with his Avengers run, unlike Snyder who hasn't produced anything even remotely good in my opinion.

Why give one asshole power over one of the highest profile books in the line, especially when its canceling several books to do it? DC needs to learn to diversify its writers (in every aspect), and not let a few superstar hacks run the show. But, I suppose as long as Dan DiDio is in charge, people like Snyder will be able to crap over everything.

I am really disappointed about losing the current Justice League books. I really liked both of them. And I'm not happy about some extended story that we all know won't last that long anyway.

Yeah, I doubt fucking Starro is going to have an extended time as a JL member, same with basically every villain on that list. I'd expect something like this from the New 52, but I had higher expectations from the Rebirth era.

Yeah, this whole four teams with a bunch of villains, does seem strange. I haven't followed what's going on with Metal, so it might make sense if you've read it, but it does still seem strange to split up the core leaguers and put them on seperate teams with second tier heroes and a bunch of villains. Not surprised to see Harley on one of the teams, that was pretty much inevitable at some point. There's no way a character as popular as she's become wasn't going end up in the League eventually.

They to be "gutting" the Teen Titans to fill these teams. Beast Boy, Raven and Starfire all joining a League.

I've no problem with the Teen Titans as a concept, but those three on the JL is long overdue. Like with Cyborg being a founder member in New 52 (which I disliked) rather than a new recruit. IMO, the Nu 52 JL could easily have been Dick, Wally, Kori, Garth, Raven, Vic, Garfield and either Kyle or Simon as GL rather than 'deaged' versions of the Big 7.

The Titans really shouldn't be the JL. When James Robinson did it, it was complete shit (although to be fair his run wasn't shit because it had Dick grayson, Cyborg and Dona Troy on it, that was more of a coincidence). The Titans have their own group dynamic that doesn't work with the JL. Individual members of the Titans joining the JL? That's fine, but not all of them. Also, the Teen titans have no business being on the Justice League. Damian Wayne isn't old enough to shave, he's not old enough for the damn justice league (I had the same problem when Miles Morales and Kamala Kahn joined the Avengers, although this is worse). Starfire I'd be ok with, and if Beast Boy and raven were still adults I'd be ok with that but since they were deaged in the reboot they no more deserve to be on the JL then Damian does (plus the Rebirth Raven and BB are complete shit, like every Titans and Teen Titans character not named Nightwing).

Then, add to that the villains and its just a stupid idea. That makes sense though, since Scott Snyder hasn't had a single good idea in his entire shit career.

Seems odd that the TEEN Titans are being brought into the JL while the adult Titans (the first generation of "sidekicks") aren't.
