DC Comics: Rebirth

honestly, i enjoy books like Velvet and I Hate Fairyland more than any of the current DC titles.

I take it you're talking just about superhero books? There's plenty of stuff coming from Image and Vertigo (OK technically this is part of DC, but it's still creator owned, non-superhero stuff) alone that couldn't be farther from what DC and Marvel are doing on a regular basis.

A lot of current DC is garbage. Still, I'd generally take a DC book over a creator owned book.
Well I couldn't disagree more. I think some of the best books out there are creator owned. I say this also being a fan of corporate comic books.

I actually don't really like non-superhero books. Outside of Sandman, the only non-superhero books I like are almost always based on franchises I'm already a fan of, like Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. Sometimes I'll enjoy books based on franchises/characters I don't generally think about (the current TMNT book is great, and Gail Simone's Red Sonja was so good that its literally the only version of the character I've ever liked). But, non-superhero books that are also not based on established characters/franchises? I generally have no desire to even glance at stuff like that. The only book in that category I'm currently reading is Walt Simonson's Ragnarok, but its almost like an extension of his Thor run at Marvel, so it doesn't really count.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that kind of stuff is bad, its just not for me. No creator owned book, superhero based or not, will be on the same level as DC/Marvel (or a few other books based on established franchises) for me, and I generally don't even glance at them. I don't care for them, and have better uses for my time. So, yeah, to me Marvel/DC are THE comic companies, and they're the only ones I'll ever regularly read or pay attention to.

I enjoy the DC characters by and large but have been disillusioned with them for a few years now. Aquaman being the only book left standing in my LCS hold file. Most books from VALIANT comics have been more enjoyable and their just started 4001 A.D. event looks fantastic based on issue #1.

Until I know where DC is going with Rebirth I'm not going to be subscribing to any books, even Aquaman for the first time in over a decade.

I know what you mean about DC. But, even though I know they've been garbage and only have a few books I still read, I'll still be trying out most of Rebirth. In the end, I love the characters (at least as they were pre-New 52) so I'll always hope something good will come from DC, even when it doesn't seem likely as long as the same people remain in charge.

I admit, I tended to be the same way until recently, but I've been trying to check out some of the original stuff coming out of Image mainly. They've got a lot of well regarded stuff coming out now like Saga and The Wicked + The Divine.

I'm sure stuff like that is fine for what it is (although I know enough about Saga to know I wouldn't read it under any circumstances). I just have no desire to read stuff like that. It has its place, but comics that aren't DC/Marvel or established franchises just don't interest me. They don't have the characters or stories I want to read, outside of rare exceptions I've already mentioned like Simonson's Ragnarok.

I can understand if you really aren't interested, I just think it's important for people to remember that there is a lot more to comics than superheroes.

Oh yeah, definitely. I'm glad there is a lot of variety in comics to give people what they want, even if I don't "get" why people like most of it. I just happen to prefer mainstream superhero stuff.

I recently had to trim my pull list and I've decided to only follow Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, plus Justice League. I really dislike that DC is going twice monthly on all these titles. If the hadn't I would be able to follow more of their characters.

Ok, after reading the first collection and flipping through the second one, I think I have to agree with you on Saga. I don't mind sex, I Iike Game of Thrones and True Blood, but Saga takes things a bit to far for me. At this point I regret buying the second collection, I'm not going to be reading it.
I mentioned it just because of how much acclaim it's getting, but then I remembered what I saw in the second collection.

I like Saga, but I agree the nudity is unnecessary. My favorite Image/Dark Horse books are East of West, Invincible, Saga, Hellboy, and anything Mark Millar writes.

I posted some more about Saga over in my comics thread, I don't want to derail this conversation anymore.

DC, via CBR, has released a couple of design sheets for the new costumes of several key characters:

Supergirl and Green Arrow are improvements over the New 52 designs. not sure about Batman. i'll have to see more of it.

Those are all improvements. I couldn't stand all the high collars in the New 52 designs, most especially for Superman. And Supergirl's thong just looked ridiculous.

It's pretty obvious they're trying to be close to the respective movie/TV versions (with the exception of Batman, and Ollie sporting his classic goattee rather than a designer stubble). And, yeah, most of these are (vast) improvements.
