I always felt that, by logical progression, the third one should have been called Rambo II: First Blood Part III. I mean, the third one can't be Rambo III because it's only the second one with Rambo in the title!

Although I suppose we should count our blessings that they didn't call them Second Blood, Third Blood, etc.

I don’t disagree with you, but I’m reminded of the fact that Tim Burton apparently wanted to call his Batman sequel Batman; he reckoned that when one or the other was on tv in years to come, people would just figure out which one it was after watching it for a while.

I like the fourth Rambo, but holy cow is it a franchise where the sequels don't really fit in with the original. Could you imagine A History of Violence 2 with Viggo Mortensen dodging missiles, firing two guns at the same time while in mid-air, and everything he shoots blowing up?

I'm more annoyed by the fifth Scream movie being called Scream.

The Halloween movies confuse me.

I have always hated Stallone as an action star because I thought he was a horrible actor in most of his 80s and early 90s roles. It wasn't until a few years ago that I actually watched the original Rocky and First Blood and realized that at one point he was trying to be a serious actor. The two best performances of his career are probably in those movies.

The only reason I ever watched the Rambo movies was because I'd fallen in love with Jerry Goldsmith's scores to the first two due to their use as stock music in the 1980s Rambo animated series (yes, they did a Rambo kids' show where the bullets never hit anybody), and I wanted to hear them in their original context. I thought First Blood was a moderately good drama about PTSD and the raw deal that returning Vietnam veterans got (it's basically the same plot as Star Trek: TNG's "The Hunted"), but I didn't like the second or third ones. I've never seen the newer ones.

I think the one bad thing about modern promotion of these kinds of event films, is that I feel like I've seen much of the film before ever going to the theater.

Probably true. Though these trailers mostly seem to recycle the same big scenes. Supes saves the girl. Luthor invades the fortress. Supes battle Kaiju. And a few others. So, for the most part we've not seen a lot.

Yeah. With Billy Dee Williams and Rutger Hauer.
It aired recently on one of the over the air digital channels and it holds up surprisingly well.
Another movie from around the same time is Escape to Victory co-staring Michael Caine about a football (soccer) team in a German prison camp in World War II.
I remember watching that on an in flight movie to Hawaii.

There are many actors who, in the hands of a capable director (one who values performance as much as spectacle), can/did produce strong performances (I would count Shatner among them, Bruce Willis as another), but who, in the hands of less capable directors, revert to the shortcuts of their stereotypical reputations.
