DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

Mike Flanagan is to take a break from Stephen King adaptations so that he can write a Clayface movie for DC Studios. Seems to be a standalone/Elseworlds film in the vein of Joker, rather than part of the new expanded universe.

That could be interesting. Clayface is one character that it would be very easy to do without Batman, and horror does seem like a pretty good way to approach him.

So Sony finally drop their non-Spider-Man Spider-Man movies and now DC are picking up where they left off.

Looking forward to the Penny Plunderer getting his own movie soon.

Eh, on TV, DC's been doing "Batman Minus Batman" shows for over 20 years now -- Birds of Prey, Pennyworth, Gotham, Batwoman, season 3 of Titans, Gotham Knights, The Penguin. The creators of Smallville originally intended to do a Young Bruce Wayne series before switching to Young Clark Kent, and IIRC Ian Somerhalder's character Adam Knight in season 3 of Smallville was originally planned to be Bruce Wayne.

Btw, James Gunn actually did give some advice the other week on how to approach franchise news depending on the source.

Judging by that, the Deadline news on the trailer is probably true, but might be false.

It will be interesting to see what Gunn says, because he's not going to stay silent. I'm beginning to think that a major reason he's in charge right now is because he's good at using social media to communicate with the public.

Really, though, the job of the person in charge of making movies should be making the movies. PR should be another department's job entirely, so that the creative head doesn't have to be distracted by it.

Of course, most "creative heads" would disagree vehemently. One experience with clumsy marketing of a project you care about is enough to do it.

With respect to his social media in general, he's made clear that he follows the DC FILM NEWS account on Twitter and that he thinks they get a lot of this stuff right. He's been active but hasn't pushed back on the "early next week" report yet, so... Of course, he usually seems to respond when he's asked directly, and I haven't seen that yet, either.

There is such a thing as doing too much. It seems like ever since he became the head of DC cinematic movies he's got his fingers ready to respond and react to every news article that comes out.
He's always been very active on social media at least as far back as the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

That's pretty much how I approach this kind of stuff.

That's true for the big official statements, but it's pretty quick and easy to drop a quick post in response to a question or news story on Instgram or X, so I don't see the harm in it. And honestly, I'd much rather see these kinds of messages come directly from a person involved in the movie, than second hand through some rando in the PR department.
And thinking about it, we don't really know if he's even posting all of this stuff himself, he's probably go enough money at this point he could very well have an assistant or social media person who handles some of those kind of posts for him.

It's not about "harm," I'd just think he'd have better things to devote his attention to. He could probably do a better job if he avoided irrelevant distractions like handholding whiny and paranoid fans.

Now, that's just needlessly insulting. PR people do an important job and they're very skilled at it. There's a reason the White House has a press secretary instead of needing the President to give every routine briefing.

Okay, good thought. I hope that is the case.
