DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

But Luthor was also a scientist and a businessman in "Batman v. Superman".
But not a CRIMINAL scientist, at least until the end.
That being said, yeah, BvS's Luthor was, like Byrne's, a scientist and businessman.. I was just noting that Maggin's version was IMO a clever twist on the concept.

This'll beat MOS's numbers, easy.

It's telling that while Warners' Man of Steel trailer has accumulated 50 million views over eleven years, Superman's racked up almost 16 million in twelve hours.
Very telling.
The fans, the general audience and world have been waiting for Superman to return since November 2017 (theatrical Justice League). Like Batman and Spider-Man, Superman remains very popular with the general audience.

Blame WB. Rather than give the audience what they wanted: another Superman movie, a World's Finest movie, Superman and Shazam in a movie, Superman leading the JSA against Black Adam. We got the course correction films. 10 movies since January 2020 that did nothing but lose money and inspire no mass audience engagement. Course Correction and a series of awful faceless cameos and CGI renders of Cavilman.

Between WB dropping the ball hard on the last 10 DC films. Which hurt their brand.

Sony and their Spider-Man Universe movies; the diminishing returns Venom trilogy, Kraven, Morbius, Madame Web. Which are not only independent from the 3 Spider-Man actors, but also independent of each other.

And Marvel going bust on their Disney+ shows (Secret Invasion, Falcon and Winter Soldier, the $225 million they spent for eight 30 minute episodes of She-Hulk, Hawkeye, Echo) and their own diminishing returns at theaters (Ant-Man 3, Eternals, Black Widow, The Marvels).

All three studios deserve a fair share of blame with the state of comic book movies. They stopped listening to the fans, stopped adapting popular stories and started doing their own thing. Thinking they could outsmart the audience, because they are trying to outsmart the source material (comics). Because they're all big Hollywood creatives. Back when Fox was making films, the last X-Men movies (Dark Phoenix, New Mutants, X-Men Apocalypse, Fantastic Four 2015) all suffered from the same hubris. With similarly observed box office bombs.

What if..... Top Gun met a Superman movie?

Great version. It was almost like a hybrid of Superman and Top Gun

Sorry, got back to this thread a little late.

Upon a re-watch, I’ve decided I must boycott and denounce this movie. It’s not a real Superman movie. Can’t be. Kent farmhouse was only one story. #notrealKentfarm #notarealsupermanmovie

:shifty:
I’ll be right there with you.

Did you see how Superman is going to do nothing to minimize damage to the city during battle kaiju fight? Why doesn’t he just lead it out of the city? Doesn’t he care about collateral damage and civilians?

What’s with the public protesting Superman? Doesn’t Gunn understand that Superman is the face of hope and optimism?

If Krypto is a hit, it will make it seem a bit foolish that live-action Superman filmmakers and TV producers have assiduously avoided him all these years.

Krypto is going to be so huge that Musk will want to buy him. C'mon, that mutt is absolutely adorable. He's going to be the co-star of the Supergirl movie and by the time that movie comes out Krypto stuffies are going to be more popular than Grogu.

I’ll be right there with you.

I know you're being funny, but his suit is still burnt when the crowd is angry with him. Maybe that is because a lot of people did get injured in that fight?

In all today's excitement I actually forgot that, yes, Krypto is featured in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow too (though if they follow the graphic novel's plot closely, his "screen time" is really rather short).

Just think, a year from now we'll probably all be in here reacting to WoT's teaser trailer. :)

And like that, TV Superman's four seasons were instantly forgotten. Like some others, I really wanted a sequel to MoS, but that ship sailed long ago and I'm ready for this take on Supes. I really liked Krypto and he'll be the new Groot for sure. I do wonder if they can pull off having him fly.
Still mixed on the bright colors. Didn't like Cavil's darker colors either. Would prefer a middle ground. As for the trunks? Goofy or not, they've always been part of the costume and it never felt right without them. Tights, cape, trunks is the iconic superhero costume and has been since '38. There's a certain perfection with the color scheme and it all balances out without any one color dominating.

Mr. Terrific looks fantastic, as does Hawkwoman. Guy Gardener? Yeah, okay. Surprised they went with the bowl cut since he hasn't had that, as far as I know, for a couple of decades now. Wish they all had their own individual costumes, but again, not a deal breaker by any means. Hell, I'm just happy we'll get a movie where a Green Lantern has a solid role to play. Long past time they rehabilitated the character/concept after the Reynolds film.

Also loved the Snyderesque slowmo shot where Supes saves the little girl. I loved the Snyder films but felt like they didn't have enough saving people scenes. We'd see the afterwards, or before, but not the actual saving. People love watching superheroes save people. Next to punching bad guys, it's pretty much the draw.

Only thing I didn't care for was the John Williams theme. I loved it back in the day, even had the record of the soundtrack in the early 80's. I would've rather that they come up with their own theme like the various Batman and Spider-Man films have. A new theme for a new generation instead of trying to make fetch happen for the subsequent generations who don't care about Superman 78.

I really hope this film is a huge success because I want to see Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Lanterns and whatever else they come up with. I'd like to see some characters brought to the screen that we thought we'd never see on the screen. I'd kill for a proper JSA movie. Or an accurate and retro Adam Strange movie. Or a New Gods movie. Or the Legion of Superhero's. It sucks that characters I'd like to see, like Dr. Fate and The Atom, will probably not get movies for being too similar to Dr. Strange and Ant-Man, but thems the breaks.

I hope in this era of superhero fatigue that DC can rejuvinate the genre while bringing a unique voice to differientiate itself from Marvel. I think taking inspiration from Grant Morrison's ability to bring some of the crazy Silver Age stuff into the modern age and keeping it both fresh and crazy is a plus. Really want them to lean into that as I loved his JLA run as well as All Star Superman, both of which did that stuff well.

Finally, I don't know if they'll work to some Endgame type film featuring everyone, but I hope not. Marvel hasn't been the same since. It was a great finale to everything that came before, but was also a great jumping off point for people who had their reasons for not caring for the stuff that came after. Like it or not, people now expect that same formula for Marvel's current saga and they're kind of a victim of their own success. Here's hoping that Gunn and Co. don't fall into that same trap. Looking forward to the full trailer and July can't get here fast enough.

Well, no, not at all. Assuming you're referring to Superman & Lois, that series remains fantastic and an indelible part of the characters' legacy. No matter how good Gunn's film may or may not be, it won't diminish the show's luster even a fraction. They're clearly doing very different things, and Superman adaptations are not a zero-sum game.

Same here. There can be a definitive live action Superman, but it does not mean some other versions cannot be enjoyed. With superhero franchises, its all like Esleworlds, anyway, in that one does not impact the other.

I agree. I really liked the early DCU films--but I'm always up to see what a new version of Superman is like. I've found something I've liked in all the live action versions I've seen. Even Dean Cain played a good Clark.

I feel Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, Guy and Mr. Terrific are a team, since they all wear similar uniforms. Terrific and Metamorpho were in a team call the Terrifics in the comics (lead by Mr. T) It was an "homage" to the Fantastic Four, Including a stretchy guy (Plastic Man) and a invisible woman (Phantom Girl)

I speculate that this team might work for Stagg Industries, who employs Metamorpho in the comics and who's logo is seen in the trailer

They definitely have a Terrifics inspired uniform; but, isn't that the Hall of Justice that Superman and Guy walk into--probably after the battle with the Kaiju?

I can't wait to hear Kara's vulgarity get bleeped or cut just short of uttering the word. I can see it now. Close up of Kara turning to face an unseen enemy-- "Oh Fu....." Fade to black with "Coming July 2026" on the screen.

And none of that matters because it has nothing to with what I said. The world moved on from TV Superman faster than it did Green Arrow, Flash and Supergirl.

I suspect that will be the case. Comparing the kaiju scene with the brief League shots. Superman will struggle with the kaiju and then be assisted by the League. Guy Gardner using his ring to shut out the people heckling at Superman.

Do we know if Maxwell Lord is lurking anywhere in the proceedings? Maybe Gunn's swapped him out narratively for Stagg.

Almost 23 million views in the first 24 hours. That's just on the DC Studios official YT account.

The world didn't "move on" from Superman and Lois faster than the Arrowverse. In both cases, the world moved on as soon as the final episodes aired.

It's, you know, television.

I'm charmed that, so far, it wouldn't be a stretch to see Gunn's Lois and Clark becoming the CW couple later in life. No, some of the surrounding continuity doesn't mesh, but so the fuck what? The feeling is there.
