Still, the lack of photorealism doesn't bother me too much in movies like this, given that the original incarnations of these characters are literally cartoons.

I think I caught a glimpse of Amber Heard in the trailer. It looked as though she was locked up in some sort of prison.
It does seem as though that the part Amber Heard/Mera was supposed to play was given over to Nicole Kidman.

Looks pretty much in line with the last one if you ask me. Speaking of CG, I rewatched Aquaman recently and thought the FX in the Sicily fight were quite fantastic.

Aquaman 2 looks interesting--certainly more than the other final group of DCEU films, but this has been on the surgeon's table so many times, one never knows if the film will feel like a straight story with no noticeable hiccups.

The one thing leaving me ho-humming from the trailer are the shots the big fight with the CG-creatures. Yet another fantasy movie going that route is not remotely exciting.

I think it looks pretty good. The first movie was certainly among the DCEU's highlights (along with Wonder Woman and Shazam!), so hopefully this will allow that film universe to go out on a high note.

A giant meh shrug from me. Much like the first one, far too much CGI that doesn't feel like it's actually underwater. Just flat bluescreen.

Gunn has been active today on his Threads account, answering and clarifying a bunch of DCU stuff:

Q: You said "DC studios movies (and cannon) start with Superman Legacy."I and many others are still confused. Are the returning actors playing new versions of the same characters?Is this a J.K Simmons as J Jonah situation?

A: Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year - a sort of aperitif to the DCU - & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.

And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.

Q: I'm wondering, how does the Blue Beetle movie factor in at this point in time? In the past you had said it was included in the new DCU, but some statements are conflicting. Will it have any relation to future projects (ie: the Booster Gold show... wink?)

A: Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller, and John Cena will Peacemaker.

As a bonus, here's Gunn's position on a perennial debate topic on these forums (spoiler -- Gunn's position is the correct one):

Q: Seriously though, why should we invest time and effort in yet another shared universe? Just build on what's already there with slight course corrections as needed.

A: If you think of anything as “investing time and effort”, no matter what shared universe, you definitely shouldn’t be! Every story should be enjoyed and worth partaking in, in an of itself, without its attachment to an outside world. If it feels like homework, screw it. “Shared universes” should add fun to the individual stories, not the other way around. The individual stories and characters are much more important to me than the connections between them.

A: They will not, no.

Even in a shared universe, nobody should ever need to watch prior things to "understand" the current story. It's a basic rule of competent writing that anything the viewer or reader needs to understand the story is explained in the story itself, whether it's part of a larger whole or not. Gunn is right -- continuity should not be a barrier to entry, just a bonus for those interested in pursuing it.
