And the hilarious thing is some soaps DID delve into Sci-Fi/Fantasy storylines:

General Hospital also did a story where a James Bond style super villain tried to freeze the world.
The Ice Princess storyline was brought back a few years ago, when the show recast Lulu Spencer (Luke and Laura's daughter).General Hospital also did a story where a James Bond style super villain tried to freeze the world.
Stavros was one of them. And then when he couldn't have Laura, he became obsessed with Laura's daughter, Lulu. So he captured her, froze her, and Helena arranged to have some of Lulu's eggs harvested (without her consent, of course). The idea was for Stavros to father a child that was half Cassadine, half Spencer... but oops, turns out Stavros was sterile. So Helena used sperm from Mikkos' bastard son Valentin (who is one of the show's current villains). A woman named Claudette (played by one of the younger actresses from OLTL) was the surrogate. Lulu didn't find out that she even had a daughter until years later.Yep, Mikkos Cassadine and his weather machine (or was it Lawrence Welk and his bubble machine?). Port Charles (GH spinoff) did a vampire storyline. GH had a space alien. OLTL had the Eterna storyline and a time-travel scenario.
Not to mention the number of times Helena Cassadine had people cryo-frozen and brought back to life.

Now we have a situation where Lulu and Valentin have a daughter named Charlotte, and they're trying to co-parent her. It's not easy since Lulu and Valentin hate each other, and Valentin's fiancee is Lulu's best friend's employer.
Luke isn't on the show anymore, as Anthony Geary retired from acting several years ago. Laura is back on the show, and she's married to Kevin Collins. Her son Nikolas is back now, having recently returned from the dead again (everyone thought Valentin killed him a few years ago).

In the case of Perry Mason, I would categorize the TV show as its own thing, rather than a continuation of previous adaptations. The radio show was a cheap, somewhat soapy serial with fifteen-minute episodes, and the movies leaned toward comedy, if I remember right. There were a BUNCH of old TV shows that were originally Radio shows.
Some of them have been remade as films.
Perry Mason, started as a series of books and then several films in the 1930's - before the classic Raymond Burr series.
Soap Operas were never my thing - not really my mother's thing either.
"As the World Turns" was my late grandmother's (b. 1901 - d. 1990) one and only tawdry passion. During the early to mid 80s, there was this one character, a successful "businessman" that was just irredeemably evil, orchestrated the deaths of people who crossed him, arguably gave JR Ewing a run for his money. But my grandmother adored him! Why? "Well, he dresses nice and has a proper haircut." Merciful Mother of Mogg!
John De Lancie was on it. It was over the top but a few years later my sisters were watching it and it had become really far out, with supernatural powers and magic talismans and people pulling off rubber face masks all the time.
I love Delancey as Q, but I always pictured Harley Quinn in the Batman the animated series as Calliope Jones.I was never able to take DeLancie seriously as Q, remembering his uber-nerd character (Eugene?) from Days.
GH has had Anthony Montgomery (Ens. Mayweather) on and off in recent years, and currently has Joe Flanigan (Col. Sheppard) in a regular role. Not to mention Lisa LoCicero (Miral Paris). No shortage of ex sci-fi people there.
It also had JG Hertzler (Martok) at one point.
And Genie Francis (Laura) is married to Jonathan Frakes, though AFAIK she herself hasn't done scifi.
Edit: I just had a mental image of Martok in a soap opera.![]()
