I hadn't heard of us trying it before, but I looked into it, and you are absolutely correct! During World War II, Canada adopted permanent daylight time as a wartime measure. We removed it at the end of the war, although it sounds like that was just a planned ending of the policy because it was no longer "needed", not because of any great backlash.

Yeah, and I think the U.S even tried it as well but rolled it back for similar reasons. And I don't even think it's been the only instance, as I've heard of something like it happened in the 70's. possibly. I think there have been multiple efforts.

The other thing to keep in mind that our circadian rhythms will be disrupted either way just by changing the schedules, and when it gets dark out, cities just end up using more and more lights which further disrupt the circadian rhythms. There have been medical studies done proving that excess of light is harmful to human health, and also animals. In fact, one accidental discovery happened with dairy cows; after changing out some lighting, it was found that they were producing more milk when lighting wasn't excessively bright and harsh.

I remember one of those attempts. I was standing on the platform of the elevated train in my neighborhood one morning, headed for school. It was full dark, not even a hint of color on the horizon, and there was a full moon. Good thing I wasn't a werewolf!

Hopefully soon the United States locks the clock for good. I am very eager to see this change take place, and see DST be a thing of the past.

A majority (varies in size depending on the survey) prefer DST year round as a concept, but the overwhelming bulk of studies shows standard time is better for our health. As long as these two perspectives remain unchanged, it’s unlikely the changes will disappear entirely and, unfortunately, if they do, the wrong option will be selected.

Yes, I believe you’re correct, the US tried it in the 70s, but it only lasted a single year due to massive backlash. I believe this was mentioned earlier in the thread. But OTOH, Saskatchewan’s been doing it since the 60s, and they’ve never gone back, so I assume things are working out OK for them there.

One of the complaints about permanent daylight time is that we’d be getting up in the dark in the winter. Many Canadians already get up in the dark in the winter. You can drive to work in the morning in the dark, and then drive home at the end of the day also in the dark. So I wonder if permanent daylight time is more popular in Canada than the US, because that’s already part of our usual winter experience? (Of course, the northern states would be in a similar boat to us.)

oh ya the wwe hall of famer donnie j trump did mention day light saving time today when he was talking to the press

or should i say he mentioned about how most people wants sunsets to be at like 7 pm and 8 pm and not around at like between 4 pm and 6 pm

We're probably heartier ;) I do agree that some of the northern states like Minnesota would inherit some of that too.

Case in point: I was just reading an article about Trump’s spat with Tom Cotton over the “Sunshine Protection Act”, and it contained this line:

If Daylight Saving Time were made permanent, the sun could rise after 8 a.m. in several major U.S. cities during the winter months.

That’s just already the reality for many Canadian cities on standard time. But Cotton is a senator for Arkansas, and people from that state wouldn’t normally have to deal with that.

Of course, Trump, being Trump, frames the argument in the dumbest way possible:

If Tom Cotton were putting Arkansas first, he would give them an extra hour of daylight and, more importantly, they wouldn’t have to run all over their houses, farms, work places, and everywhere else, twice a year, having to change their Clocks, and often forgetting to do so.

He knows that this won’t magically create an “extra” hour of daylight, right? I’m 100% in favour of permanent daylight time, but you have to at least be honest about what it gives you. You are shifting the clocks so that sunset occurs later against your measurement of time, but so does sunrise. You still get the same amount of daylight in a 24-hour period… no legislation is going to change that. (IDK, maybe he meant to add “in the evening”, but ran into a character limit or something. But with all the other nonsense that comes out of his mouth, I’m not inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.)

This is Trump we're talking about, he doesn't know anything.

As for Manitoba, here's exactly what sticking to daylight saving time will mean (specifically Winnipeg):
On November 15th, sunrise to sunset is now 0840-1744
On December 15th, it's 0919-1727, and that's about as bad as it gets.
January 15th - 0920-1755
February 15th - 0839-1847
And then back to current "normal".

If we instead stuck with permanent standard time... then in June, we'd get sunrise at 0419 with a sunset at 2038. I'm not necessarily opposed to that either.

Of course, Trump, being Trump, frames the argument in the dumbest way possible:

I'll take 'Dumbest Things Trump has Said' for $500, Alex! And oh man, that would be quite the category, because we know he's said some oddball things.

In other news, Governor Duhsantis wants to get rid of property tax in Florida. His plan? To charge Canadians who own a property, more in order to subsidize Florida. Yeah, good plan if you want Canadians to start leaving in droves, if they haven't already left and sold their properties.

"We need to focus on our Florida residents. And focus on, in this case, Florida homeowners, particularly our homesteaded homeowners, and we need to focus the relief there," DeSantis said at a news conference last year defending his call for lower property taxes instead of a sales tax cut.

"I want Canadian tourists and Brazilian tourists subsidizing the state and making it so Florida residents pay less taxes. I don't want to give Canadians a tax cut."

are we still gonna have to change the time next month

Unless you move out west before November 1. ;)

But yes, as Ovation stated, as long as you stay in Ontario, you're going to have to change the clocks next month. Trust me, if that changes in the next 28 days, someone (me, if no one else) will post about it here. Although I absolutely do not expect any announcement with less than a month to go. (Although I guess it's Doug Ford, so who knows. )

I voted to continue observing DST. As others mentioned, we tried it before and everyone hated it. People think they want more daylight at the end of the day. But there have been several studies that prove we need sunlight in the morning because it sets our circadian rhythms. And without that it can cause difficulty sleeping and moodiness. So if we end up ditching DST and fixing it to permeant daylight savings, we're just going to end up with crankier sleep deprived people. Like life doesn't suck enough already.

The reason why this doesn't work right is that the time zone borders are in the wrong place. they go up and down but the sun light travels at an angle. That's why the "corners" of the time zones are always in the dark later. Just angle the time zones and you fix the problem.

Yeah, got that right. Light Pollution has something to do with it too. Medical studies have been done proving the ill effects of excess light that interrupt our circadian rhythms. The irony behind LED lighting is that while it's less costly and more energy efficient, originally the hope was that the world would end up using less of it, but the reverse has actually happened, where communities have seen that they could double-up on lighting for lesser cost, and suddenly you have blue-spectrum white LEDs flooding communities everywhere, and no, it's not better when you do it improperly. And LED billboards are just as bad when the likelyhood is that they've never tuned the brightness away from the defaults.

And there's a reasons some cars now automatically dim the headlights for oncoming cars, as it's also been proven that overly bright headlights can actually lead to roads that are less safe, leading to more collisions.

All this to say, TLDR, it's not going to matter so much what people end up voting for, as it's going to get dark either way, and then lighting automatically gets turned on, and humanity has had a habit (increasingly a bad one) for lighting up, often distractedly so.
