Didn't this experiment already take place in the 1970s under Nixon? Too many accidents in the winter and kids walking in the dark to go school, especially with sun rising at 8:45 a.m. Granted, many kids now are dropped off to school by their parents, but not everyone has that luxury.

It should be up to individual school districts to decide what times to send their kids to school.

I know that here in Washington, over the years since I was in school, they've gradually pushed back the start times for K-12 for that very reason.
Most elementary-middle school doesn't start til 9am, which gives the kids some light in the morning while waiting at the bus stop.

When I was in elementary school it started at 7am, so I don't understand why everyone seems so hung up about "kids going to school in the dark", when for me that was the norm. Younger me couldn't have imagined going to school that late, I remember getting up at 5:30 to get ready for school. Heh.

Here's the Wikipedia article on it, with citations to newspaper articles of the day. Opposition to permanent DST in the 1970s was fueled by the deaths of eight children in Florida attributed to dark conditions. It really could not be any clearer why people got "hung up about" it.

Sending kids to school super early is for the parents’, not the kids’, benefit. Elementary students are a bit better at coping with an earlier start time (should be around 8:30, ideally) than high schoolers (for whom 9:30 is ideal). But getting kids up at 5:30, unless they live very far from school, is NOT conducive to best practices for their development and education.

Just to clarify this for you, the bill has only passed the US House of Representatives. It has not been voted on in the Senate, has not been signed by the president, and is not an actual law yet. We don't know at this point if the changes set out in the bill will ever be implemented.

I don't know about the rest of the school districts around the country, but, here in Washington, high school starts first, followed by middle school, finally elementary.

The reason being is that high schoolers can adapt to the time change better than middle and elementary school, as well as do after school activities and work, or be at home for their younger siblings.

I do remember in high school, there was a "Zero" period that started around 7-7:30am for band, drama and athletics students.

There were times when my brother was in band and I had to catch a ride with him to school where we would be up and out the door by 6:30-6:45.

Thankfully, the cafeteria was open at that time serving breakfast, so I was able to grab a bite to eat before 1st period.

The reason being is that high schoolers can adapt to the time change better than middle and elementary school, as well as do after school activities and work, or be at home for their younger siblings.

This actually contradicts a large scale study of academic performance wherein it was clearly demonstrated that high schoolers suffered considerably more from earlier starts than other levels. For reasons of saving on busing costs, a very large school district changed high school start time from 9:00am to 7:00am (so elementary students could start at 8:15 using the same buses). The district was previously in the top 15-20th percentile of all districts in the US in every significant academic achievement metric but fell quickly into the bottom quarter. After a decade, the high schoolers went back to their 9:00 start. Performance increased dramatically.

Teens actually need more sleep than grade schoolers (almost as much as infants/toddlers) owing to the physiological changes they experience. They also, in the aggregate, often see their sleep cycles move later into the evening.

There are several reasons why school districts rationalize earlier start times for high schoolers—none of them are helpful academically.

And it's Daylight Saving Time, not "savings." Savings are what you keep in the bank.

Thank you! It's minor but it's up there with safety deposit box for me.

I'm happy to keep changing. It works fine. And if we move to BST permanently we'll have the Scottish carping about it being dark at 11am or something!

oh ya i think ontario signed the bill a while back and i think we are just waiting for a few eastern states in the us of a and i think quebec too to get theres signed too
