This is the weekend when those of us in the US and Canada move our clocks forward one hour to observe Daylight Savings Time. Well, for (most of) the residents of the province of British Columbia, this year will be a little different, because Premier David Eby announced on Monday that this time change would be the last one that (most of) the province takes part in, and effective this weekend, they are moving to permanent daylight savings time.

I haven't seen any official polls yet, but the general reaction I'm seeing online seems to be overwhelmingly positive, as the twice-per-year clock changes are very unpopular. However, there is a segment of the population that has spoken up against this quite vigorously: not because they're opposed to getting rid of the semi-annual clock changes, but rather because they are opposed to adopting permanent daylight savings time, and feel they should adopt permanent standard time instead.

People on both sides of the divide seem to have very strong feelings on the issue, so I thought it would be interesting to poll the TrekBBS members to see what their preferences are. I've added a poll to this post where you can register your preference if you live in a DST-observing area.

I know there are arguments on both sides. I also know that most of the experts you ask will say that standard time is the better option, since it apparently lines up more closely with our natural circadian rhythm. And I know that an individual's preference could depend on a lot of factors: your chronotype, your job requirements, what age your children are, etc. So please feel free to share the reasoning behind your preference, if you would like.

For me personally, I've always wished to adopt DST permanently. I always dislike it when we move back to standard time every year, and look forward to when we finally get to move the clocks forward again. I really dislike it getting dark around 4:00pm in late December. That's always so depressing. And if we were on standard time year-round, I see no practical benefit to the sun coming up at 4:00am in late June. Having more light at the end of the day, rather than the beginning, just sounds like a much better option to me. I do have a theory, which I'm wondering if it will pan out here, that morning people (either because they are naturally, or their job forces them to be) are more likely to prefer permanent standard time, and non-morning people (like myself) are more likely to prefer DST. So if you want to mention whether you're a morning person or not, I think that would be interesting dimension to look at. :)

One of the things that I learned about because of this news, is that apparently the US tried an experiment in the 1970s where they stayed on DST year-round... and apparently everyone hated it, and they repealed it, and returned to the semi-annual clock changes, before the scheduled end date of the experiment. I know we have some members who would have been around during that, so it would be interesting to hear your experiences! Conversely, here in Canada, Saskatchewan has been on permanent DST since 1966, and I haven't heard of any massive complaints, or demands to repeal it. The territory of Yukon is also on permanent DST too, although only since 2020, but I haven't heard of any general unhappiness with it, either.

Get rid of it forever.

Daylight "saving" time - with its mythical "extra hour" of daylight - is an abomination that should have gone the way of the dinosaurs decades ago. It's one of the most completely pointless things human beings have ever devised and it's long outlived any purpose it may once have served. There's another six weeks or so of it to battle through here in Australia and already it's completely dark at my normal wake-up time. So the first thing I've got to do is turn on a light. How is that "saving" anything?

If people aren't able to cope with doing away with this utterly stupid idea forever, there's another alternative: Put the clocks forward / back half an hour and leave it at that. Forever.

I'm really, really not a fan of D"S"T. To put it politely. :p

ETA: Looking forward to @T'Bonz and @Santaman finding this thread.

That's interesting. I'm definitely not a morning person; my brain runs on autopilot until about 10:00 A.M. I'd prefer to make DST permanent all year round or else eliminate it altogether.

And it's Daylight Saving Time, not "savings." Savings are what you keep in the bank.

Typically morning person, but get rid of one or t'other. Doesn't matter which to me.
(It'll at least stop one argument one of my mates is always trying to pick with another at the least :D )

In Pacific Northwest it is completely dark by about 4:15 on the winter equinox. Turn it on and keep it on. The pnw's "long dark" is a bitch to battle through every year.

I kinda liked it in Portland in winter. You didn't have much Sun because of clouds anyway. I'm more of a night person.

Anchorage has six hours of daylight on Dec. 21st. I loved living there.

Tangent: why isn't New Year's Day right after the solstice? Why wait 11 more days?

I've experienced both twice-yearly clock changes and permanent standard time, and I actually prefer the switch. I definitely wouldn't want to move to permanent DST. I hate getting up in the dark during winter as it is. With permanent DST, I'd barely see any sunlight at all during winter. On the other hand, with permanent standard time it is already too bright by 4 a.m during summer. Black-out curtains help with that, but I prefer natural lighting. So I don't mind changing the clocks twice a year if it means I get a little daylight in winter and a little less sleep disturbance in summer.

if we get rid of day light saving times then does that means no more turning the clock foward or is it no more turning the clock backwards

I assume you mean the winter solstice? The spring and fall equinoxes are when the day and night are of equal length.

Either permantnely, just no more changing :D

Stick a fork in it and call it done, whichever way.

Since a few of you mentioned this, I added in a poll option for you.

I remembered this after I posted the whole thing. I wondered if anyone would call it out.

That kind of "split the difference" approach doesn't actually sound like a bad idea. The kind of compromise where maybe no one's completely happy, but everyone can live with it. Although I'd like it to be something that everybody adopted all over the world, since it seems like it would made things a little bit trickier if you were +/-x.5 from every other time zone. (Shout-out to any Newfoundlanders in the thread! :D )

Unfortunately that's not uncommon for us now in the dead of winter on standard time. That's one of the big reasons I prefer permanent DST, we might actually get to see some daylight after work! :)

On the other hand, with permanent standard time it is already too bright by 4 a.m during summer.

Agreed on this, that's why permanent standard strikes me as the worst of both worlds.

So I don't mind changing the clocks twice a year if it means I get a little daylight in winter and a little less sleep disturbance in summer.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but: my preference is permanent daylight time, but I think I'd rather stick with the clock changes than go to permanent standard. And I really don't like the clock changes!
