David Tennant leaves DW after the specials

This is interesting, if true (but, of course, the source is questionable).

I've always thought the staff's insistence that the "gap year" had always been planned was such a strange and dubious assertion (why would you simply plan to take the channel's most popular show off the airwaves for a year, and then bring it back?), and the Occam's Razor interpretation that the gap year was brought about in an effort to placate Tennant's desire to work on the stage before returning to Who always made so much more sense to me.

In any event, after the initial shock of Tennant's announcement, I'm simply interested to see where the show goes from here. I've said before that I hoped a new season with Tennant under Moffat's control might lead to less running around and shouting like a maniac ... now, it's time to just strap in and find out what's next in store.

I can actually believe it was planned, with an eye to replacing the production staff, giving everyone a break, giving them room to breathe etc. I mean it's not like it's unheard of for shows to have long gaps between series and stay popular, at least here in the UK.

^ I can imagine that's certainly possible -- I'm approaching this from an American perspective, and I'm not familiar with any American programs (much less the most popular one in the country when it's on the air) taking a year off and coming back the next, as though nothing happened. That's pretty much unheard-of over here; if a show takes a vacation, it's because it's been cancelled.

Well, I guess that happened with 24, but that was only because of a writers' strike.

Meh. Sounds like someone took every rumor and fact from the past few months and put them in a blender. (Sean Pertwee again- "Eddie" must love how far that's gone!) There's also no reason why a River Song arc couldn't be done with the eleventh Doctor if Moffat really wanted it, which I doubt anyway.

In RTD's book he describes the gap year first as a promise to Tennant and then, secondarily, as a more general way to recharge the show, so it's not impossible that Tennant was the first one to broach the idea. I doubt, though, that in recent negotiations he would have asked for another gap year or a salary he could never hope to get.

The Sopranos did it as did The Adventures Of Superman.

Well I can't say that I'm surprised about this and I know that when the final episode of the specials airs next Christmas that I'll be pretty emotional. David was a great tenth doctor and a fitting successor to Chris Ecceslton. I wouldn't have minded another series or two with him as the tenth though either.

UK shows often have looong breaks between series. Yes, sometimes even by design. Sometimes it's just to give the BBC's wallet a breather.

Personally I think Tennant's stage ambitions were just a convenient excuse.

You know, there would always be a way he could come back no matter which regeneration the Doctor is at...

...the human Doctor on Pete's world living with Rose. He could come back with Billie Piper like 10, 15, 25 years from now with equal time passing for them. He'd probably would have built a TARDIS of his own, being left there. Could take a while to do it. Finishing it would be a good reason to start a new series with them, a spin-off series.

A series in which the Alt. David Tennant grows up to be Peter Cushing's "Doctor Who"???

LOL

Its a real shame. I liked Tennant a lot, never really took to Eccleston or piper but loved Tennant and martha and donna.

Hey, been over in Trek XI for a few weeks.

To be honest, i dont blame him, hes done what he wants, and wants to do more interesting things.

But, as a mate said the other day, there goes the 'little kiddie fanbase'.

dont know if that is a good explanation or not, but i am surprised.

I expected Tennant to stay on at least until half way through the 'proper' season 5.

More like there goes the middle aged woman fanbase

Kids love Tennant too. Though in their case it's the energy he brings to the role they like.

One of the reasons why, whoever they cast, anyone hoping for a more "sedate" or "serious" Doctor will probably be disappointed.

yes reading the Newsround page, there are ALOT of kids very sad abot this, as for the female fanbaes who think he is cute, I dont really care, they were never true fans IMO

Yeah but given Moffat's various comments I wasn't expecting a serious Doctor. I am hoping for someone slightly less manic than Tennant could be on occasion though...

Doctors come and Doctors go. It is the way of the world. Just don't give the new Doctor as horrible of an outfit as Colin Baker had or that stupid question mark umbrella that McCoy had.

I seriously doubt they'll ever do something like that again. :techman:
