David Tennant leaves DW after the specials

1) Absolutely nowhere in either episode does it say it happens/ed to the 10th Doctor.

It is made pretty clear that River Song recognises Ten as the Doctor she knows. She's surprised to find he doesn't know her and later only notices that his eyes look older in her time. So, it's quite obvious that she met Ten. He hasn't aged in too obvious a manner when she first meets him, though, so this story can still happen even if we do see a regeneration in the last special, provided the Doctor doesn't make any contrary statements about his own time line in them. However, I'm not too keen on actually seeing this story.

Even though that's what I got from the episode, I've recently read several reports from Moffat's appearance on comic-con, where he said that Tennant's was not the only incarnation of the Doctor River Song has met, that she has met several Doctors. So maybe like Davros, she too just recognized that unmistakable Doctor quality in Ten and not the face itself...Who knows

How so? I know you say she recognized the age in his eyes, or lack thereof, but I don't see where that's proof that she knew the 10th incarnation. Just that she could tell he was younger.

Also, for example...

From Wikipedia
She recognises him, but because of his lack of familiarity with her and upon a closer inspection of his face, she realises that he is the earliest version of the Doctor that she has ever encountered and one who has not met her yet.

Well, I absolutely agree that she is The Doctor's wife (and, apparently, more). But, that doesn't address her being whatever to the 10th incarnation...

BTW, it's funny how Tennant called Moffat "my new boss", but isn't going to be in any of his series...

I've been saving this picture for his departure but I was hoping I wouldn't have to use it for like another 3 years

What she says is that he's younger than she's ever seen him. Even in the podcast for the episode by Moffat, they wondered if they'd do a story about their first meeting in one of the specials.

Well, she recognises him and she's surprised at him not recognising her. If Ten was an incarnation she didn't know, she would have instantly known that something went wrong. Apparently, she's only able to tell the difference to her Doctor by the age of his eyes. She might have known other incarnations although this wouldn't quite fit into the story as seeing a former version of the Doctor should instantly ring alarm bells regarding the point of time her message arrived at. And that doesn't happen in the episodes. But even if that was the case, Ten would still be the first incarnation she's met. But since he doesn't seem to show obvious signs of ageing later on, this story (and many more) could still fit into his life time even if we do see him die at the end of the last special, provided we aren't given any details on when in his personal time line it happens.

I simply don't understand why some fans are so literal about the whole River Song story.
What? We're supposed to take it metaphorically? :cardie:

Absolutely nowhere in the history of Doctor Who is there any example of consistency of such a nature that should give any of us hope that such a story will actually be explored.
To be completely honest, I don't want the River Song story explored.

The reason? Like the Time War, this is a story that's best hinted at. Give viewers something concrete, and the resulting story is bound to not live up to expectations and self-imagined stories that fans have in their minds.

Also, more specific to River Song, the two episodes were already derivative of The Time Traveler's Wife. My concern is that any story that fills in the blanks would be even moreso.

 love that logic, we all come up with movies, based on what we think will happen in a movie trailer, should we all not go see the movie in case the real thing is different from what we think will happen.

what about Trek XI, should we not watch that because the movie on screen might not be the one that the Trek XI forum is predicting it to be?

this video kinda makes my point for me in a better way

^ applying that logic to the video, they shouldnt have made the Iron Man movie

No, but we should be aware that the trailer may make the movie sound more interesting than it possibly could be.

Anyway, if we're going to talk about logic, your analogy is flawed: a trailer exists to sell a product that's already been made, whereas River Song and the Time War were created to function as background for other stories.

And again, logic requires that we not overgeneralize: some hints or previews raise expectations more than others. River Song's backstory and the Time War both suggest intricate science fiction tales, and the Time War would also have to be epic. There's a practical question as to whether you could do a Time War/River Song story that would be more entertaining than whatever fans have imagined. That's what Allyn is saying, not "Never go to the movies" or whatever.

You've never had kittens?

The problem with River being a logical step into a larger story is this... Nothing was planned. the people at the top don't really talk to each other which is what I was amazed to find out from all those confidentials. You have all these powerful people from behind the scenes talking about how they were blind-sided by the brilliance of their contemporaries around about the same time as every one else in the cast gets their scripts for the first read through...

Though really.

Asgard!

I want to see Thor vs Loki on Doctor Who totally stealing the thunder (Wow a pun!) from that movie marvel Comics has on the drawing board for 2010... Because of the amazing set up, their love story practically writes itself, although it would be a bit of a muddle to wax this onto the time war.

I'm gagging for more Paul McGahn.

Althoguh Paul and Sheriden or Paul and India?
