Strictly on first seasons, it is for me. Although it will have to ramp up quickly to beat TOS season 1 overall.David Mack did say he thought that this would be the best first season of Trek ever, correct?
For me, it isn't starting out that way...
Guys, David Mack is praising Discovery to the Celestial Temple and back. He's seen more than any of us have. He isn't judging it by trailers and interviews. He knows what he's talking about and he's thrilled.
This should end any debate among Trek fans as to whether the show is going to be any good and/or honor the canon and spirit of the original. David Mack isn't just some writer; he's a fan, and a fan who knows his Trek.
Now, this is where some nay-sayers will say that Mack is "just trying to keep his job" to which I answer, "What job?" He doesn't work on the show. And while he's the man who wrote the first DSC tie-in novel, he's not the only one who ever will write one (Dayton Ward is writing the second) nor is he obligated to praise the show like this just because he writes Trek novels. He had no prompting to say what he said other than the oppressing negativity he was seeing on social media. And if he agreed with it but still wanted to be able to write for it, he simply would have kept his mouth shut.
Sure, there have been times writers and producers praised something they knew wasn't deserving because they were trying to hold on to the work. But several factors would be in play there that aren't in play here. First, such people worked on those shows and if the show failed, they'd be out of a job. This isn't the case for Mack. Whatever happens to DSC, Mack has plenty else to write about, both within and without the Trek franchise. Second, you can generally tell when a person who works on the show is praising it just because they have to. There seems to be no real excitement or joy in what they're saying; it seems like hollow words, even if you only see them written. For example, I never believed Brannon Braga was genuinely excited to be working on ENT.
David Mack knows more than any of us, and he loves what he knows. Star Trek: Discovery is going to rock. Case closed.
Personally I think it had a stronger opening two hours than any spinoff with the possible exception of DS9. I think people forget that TNG had a very weak opening, and that every series other than the first have had very weak first seasons overall. Usually weak second ones as well.Strictly on first seasons, it is for me. Although it will have to ramp up quickly to beat TOS season 1 overall.
I have a sneaky suspicion though that he wasn't including TOS in that reference. We often don't count it as a 'first season' when discussing Trek's poor record at first seasons. I could easily see this being the best first season of a spin-off.

I haven't forgotten. Farpoint for all its flaws (and they are many) was still more enjoyable, IMO.I think people forget that TNG had a very weak opening, and that every series other than the first have had very weak first seasons overall.

When do we get to the best part? After the first two episodes? It is its own beast at the moment, murky and trying to get a hold of a direction, a 'mission statement'. I feel like I watched background material and I'm waiting for the star ship Discovery to save the day. A dead Captain, an erratic lead character, and a 'where is it' flag ship is a heavy going start. Funny child like reaction but in the past I'd watch Star Trek and would want to be literally on board any of the star ships. I haven't got that feeling at all yet.His exact quote: "Want to know my prediction for what's coming on @starrekcbs? Here it is: THE BEST FIRST SEASON OF A STAR TREK SERIES, =EVER=. 5/13"
I know that watching the first season of TOS (via reruns) grabbed me, shook my world and had me from that point as a Trek fan. And that was right from WNMHGB (Channel 17 at one point showed them in production order).
DSC didn't do that yet. So for me, TOS still has the best first season of a Star Trek series, =EVER=.
The thing is, he didn't even see the completed episodes until after the screening on the 19th. So I consider his earlier opinion... incomplete.
Yes, I know it isn't the same as watching the final product, but its more of an impression then we have.
The first two episodes haven't exactly filled me with confidence. Have to wait and see how next week's episode plays out.
So much for giving it a miss, eh?After watching the first episode, I'm ready for them to cue Riker and Troi so they can skip to a better holonovel.
