Dauntless & Slipstream Technology.

People,

I'm sure many of you remember the Dauntless, the pseudo-Federation ship from the ep "Hope and Fear," equipped with a slipstream drive which made Voyager's warp drive look like a horse-and-buggy.

I always liked the sleek design of the ship -- it reminded me of a cross between a Tholian ship and a Federation ship. I also recall Voyager used a version of the slipstream techology to shave off 10,000 light years off her trip back to the Alpha Quadrant, a fate different from her destruction, as shown in "Timeless".

Obviously, since VOY returned to the Alpha Quadrant, I wonder if the knowledge they gleaned from both the Dauntless and their own experiments with slipstream technolgy was ever used again? Any one know if there's been a novel delving into that possibility?

I'd like to see a Dauntless-class vessel again.

The Dauntless does appear to become a Federation starship. In the episode Azati Prime of Enterprise the Dauntless is seen in a battlegroup fighting the sphere builders alongside Prometheus, Nova, and Vor'Cha Class ships.

So we know it becomes a Federation ship in at least that alternate universe.

I think it's important to remember that the Dauntless was actually an alien vessel disguised as a Federation starship. Starfleet wouldn't necessarily design a ship along those lines.

The slipstream technology, as per dialouge from 'Timeless' was meant to be a fundamental change in Voyager's journey, going from a question of 'if' to 'when'.

I imagine that Starfleet could do something with the technology of slipstream, but it would take years, probably decades, to get it going fleet wide.

This is true -- that's why I called it a pseudo-Federation ship. I guess I just like the ship in a "starship porn, fanboy ain't it cool" kind of way -- after all, don't they call ships "she"? ;)

I do recall there was a TNG ep dealing with slipstream techology, too, and like in "Timeless," it had disastrous results.

Just like I want a little red Corvette someday, I want a Dauntless ship in the worst way!
