Generally speaking men prefer women shorter than themselves and women prefer men taller than themselves. At best they'll accept someone near the same height.

But of course there are exceptions. Some men actually like taller women and some women like shorter men. And it doesn't always have to be related to some dominant/submissive issue.

And so the question is: if you're male would you date someone taller than you?

I have never had a big hang-up about height. All the guys I liked in college were the same height or slightly shorter.

The guy I married, however, is rather tall--about 6' 4".

All the men I've dated have been taller than me. I would have no objection to dating a man shorter than me, but since I'm only 5'3", there aren't many guys around shorter than me. (I once dated a guy who was 6'6". People made some interesting remarks about us when we were out in public together.)

I'm just a hair over six feet, so there aren't a lot of women taller than I am. I'd feel perfectly comfortable dating a woman the same height as me -- like the late dancer/actress Juliet Prowse, f'rinstance.

Hell, her LEGS were six feet long.

More than six feet tall -- well, if she's REALLY hot.

If I didn't date taller than myself, my date pool would have been quite limited!

More seriously, I'm short even for an Italian (and that means very short, as about 5'3"), and I've dated girls from about 5' to about 5'9". I understand that dating shorter can be unfashionable for some girls (no accounting for taste), but luckily I didn't have many problem with that. I guess I'm sufficiently cute and smart to compensate for my lack of height. ;)

I must apologize because originally I wanted to have two poll questions: one asking men if they'd date taller than themselves and one asking women if they'd shorter than themselves.

That's how tall my dad is, and he's had two wives shorter than him. In fact, my late uncle's wife, at 5'5" is the tallest person on that side of my family, other than their son who is also 5'5" (both of my uncles are/were also 5'3"; my grandfather claimed to have been 5'5" at one point but I never saw any evidence of that ). I'm the tallest female blood relative, clocking in at a whopping. 5'1 3/4". :vulcan:

Anyway, this thread is obviously not aimed at women, but I like 'em tall; never dated anyone under 6'.

I'm 5' 1". Hubby is 6' 1".

I wanted someone taller than me, but at my height, that wasn't hard to find. Hubby just happened to be so tall. I'd've loved him if he were 5' 6". Now, if he were 5' 2" ... I think his personality would've been much different. I know my height has influenced my personality. Being short, one tends to literally get overlooked--people can have a conversation looking each other in the eye and my passing between them doesn't block their vision. I think that's why many short people are described as "outspoken."

Munchkin. ;)

I'm considered short for my family, at about 5 6". Everyone on my dad's side is about 6 feet, or thereabouts. My mom, however, is a shorty. She's about 5' 1" or 2. Whenever we come to visit, she has hubby get things down from the cupboard for her.

Most women I find myself attracted to romantically are near exactly my height (5'-7") or a touch shorter. My first girlfriend was 5'-1".

I admit I prefer women a bit shorter than myself. I feel odd being with someone taller. A few times I tried dancing with a woman taller than me and it felt so weird.

My brother, who's six-foot-two, married a woman who's about a foot shorter that he is. Her parents are short too. When I used to visit their house, I was always banging my head on things hanging from the ceiling. We used to joke that my brother married into a family of Jewish dwarfs.

Fortunately for my nephew and niece, they're both pretty average in height.

Taller is pretty much the norm, since I'm between 5'1" and 5'2". I had one boyfriend that was 6'2", which was a bit silly but not a problem. Theoretically I would date someone shorter than me but I don't really know any guys shorter than I am.

I'm 5'2" so most men are taller than me anyway. My husband is 5'8" and our kids are all short for their ages. My sister-in-law is taller than my brother and my brother wouldn't let her wear heels at their wedding, the spoilsport.

A bit OT, but this discussion reminds me of what Nicole Kidman said after her divorce from Tom Cruise: “Well, at least I can wear heels again!”
