Spoilers Daredevil: Born Again discussion thread

I'm absolutely loving seeing Matt working not only as a thorough and dependable lawyer, but also how he broke out his detective skills in tracking down the "Punisher" casing...and the man himself, deep in the bowels of the city. I'm not surprised (but nonetheless relieved) that Frank wasn't responsible for Hector's death and how the murderer was instead one of his loony fanboys and I'm grateful that Frank finds all of them disgusting (I really hope we see more of that particular element explored this season).

But the real highlight of the episode was the powerhouse moment when Frank forced Matt to face his grief and guilt over Foggy's death. I think Frank found a crack in Matt's resolve and belief in the justice system because clearly Matt is not satisfied that Bullseye is locked away for life (another element that I hope we see explored more this season). Also, I'm loving how everyone is casually referring to Poindexter as Bullseye instead of his real name. I can't remember if the Netflix even used the name Bullseye once but by this point Poindexter is well-known by his villainous moniker.

I'm continuing to love everything about Wilson and Vanessa's relationship and power struggles...but I was genuinely surprised to see Adam still alive (...if not well). I fully expected him to be at the bottom of the Hudson and I feel like Vanessa assumes the same. But of course that's not enough of a punishment for Wilson and I love that his takeaway from Heather's counseling sessions is trying to find forgiveness for Adam, even after his lengthy imprisonment and gods only know what else.

Speaking of time, I keep finding myself reflecting on how Vanessa is hung up by Wilson's sudden and long absence. Even though it's clearly about his time away after being shot by Echo (which feels that like should be an understandable convalescence), it keeps feeling like a reference to Wilson being gone during the Blip (to be clear, I know that's not the case but it just feels like that). My point is the length of Wilson's absence (as well as the hows and whys) feels murky at best and I wish we could get some clarity on that point, but I suspect we won't get such details. Likewise how the show probably won't directly address how a well-known crime lord not only got out of prison, but was able to garner enough support to be elected to office (and that's even with acknowledging the obvious real-life parallel).
I enjoyed Leroy asking whether he could blame (the footage of) his crime on a Skrull.

I love the show but it is treading water a little bit as if it's holding back for whatever reason.

There is development of course. The counselling sessions between Vanessa and Fisk prove to be very interesting, both of them holding onto their issues and neither side truly willing to move on or make the first move.

It was also a bit of a stretch that Matt found Castle this easily - i fail to see the correlation of sniffing a spent shell casing and then know exactly where to go to find the Punisher but oh well. However that being said the scene between Frank and Matt was gold and the same conversation they had way back on the roof ( nice callback to show Matt on the exact same roof where they met for the first time) with the twist that Matt's approach in trusting the system cost Foggy his life and Frank put his finger directly on that wound.

The ending was great too showing that no matter what Fisk does he will remain the wolf in sheeps clothing, he can't abandon his nature.

Now enough standstill and character examination, make a move please and put some heat into the show.

Pacing wise, episode 4 feels like the mushy middle of a serial without enough structure.

But goddamn, why did the MCU finally choose to explore genuine political themes here? Why wasn't there even half of this in Brave New World, Secret Invasion, or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

I felt the same way and couldn't quite put my finger on why, but I think Eric Voss at New Rockstars nails it when he says that it feels like this episode was the biggest victim of the restructuring and reshoots.

I really think several of the cast members having been giving Emmy worthy performances this season and especially in this episode.
This was definitely a quieter episode, but it did give us some great character stuff with Matt, and the Fisks. The scenes Matt and his client, and Matt and Castle were great, as we saw both of those characters forcing Matt to confront his issues with the way our legal system works. It definitely felt like this episode was a big step towards him putting the Daredevil suit back on. Chris Cox and John Bernthal were fantastic in this whole scene. I wasn't real clear on one thing though, is Frank still doing his Punisher thing, or is he just hiding out down in the sewers now?
The Fisks counseling was another great scene, with fantastic performances from Ayelet Zurer and Vincent D'Onofrio.
I was shocked that Adam was still alive, I had assumed Fisk killed him as soon as he found out about the affair.
This episode felt like the kind of episode that you get between a season's bigger story arcs and looked like the first step towards Daredevil and The Kingpin coming back.

I was just thinking about little effort they are making to give the new supporting cast (Cherry, Kirsten, Heather) any characterization or attention. And I came to a realization. It's deliberate.

The hollowness of Matt's supporting cast is thematic. Matt has pasted over the gaping, raw wound in his soul with the trappings of normalcy. With people that feel familiar and safe, but from whom he is inherently disconnected. The life of Matt Murdock has become performative. Pretending at regular life to disguise the burning guilt, pain and loss that have overwhelmed him.

Combine this with the fact that Matt has given up Daredevil, because he believes he can no longer control the devil within, and Matt has no pillars left to prop up his identity. The irony of the situation then being that putting on the suit and getting back out there would actually be a HEALTHY step for him, provided that he can keep from losing control. It's the one part of his life he can reclaim and redeem, and the first step to rebuilding a real Matt Murdock.

Matt needs DD as much or more than NYC does. He just isn't willing to admit it yet.

A brilliant article highlighting the problem with The Punisher as a character - he's not to be admired, thought of as cool or even emulated. Unfortunately this message got lost hard because Marvel kinda dropped the ball in this one and failed to right the message once people started to see him as a role model.

As the article mentions i've seen the Punisher Logo on military units often enough that i noticed and thought about the implications and it scared me - geared up soldiers under stress, under constant threat of attack and with the mindset that killing the bad guys is cool.

Let's see how this show plays out that theme and if Marvel is actually trying to address the image of Castle and deconstructs him or if they stay at the surface like they did since the character was invented.

I will however love the "philosophical" differences between show Punisher and Daredevil, it led to some of the most fantastic scenes within Marvel shows by each pushing their views without taking a side ( and maybe that's the problem too).

I am pretty sure that I have heard this before, but I think it was more hearsay than from the man himself. At any rate, Jon Bernthal declined the opportunity to appear in the original version of Daredevil Born Again and only agreed to reprise the role after the creative overhaul.

Friends of mine in high school thought Punisher was cool. I saw college students wearing Punisher shirts or the like.

As a character, few have interested me less or poisoned a well faster. But, killing bad guys has always been cool so such a character becoming appealing doesn't surprise me. Hell, Stick killing Nobu was kind of cool. It's always a mixed bag.

Season 2 will only have eight episodes.

There's a big difference between that and police painting the Punisher logo on their cars.
One leads to the other.

The appeal of order and immediate punishment is something that I see frequently with people. I wish that bad actors are immediately punished or enforcing the rules can lead to this wish and identifying with someone who punishes the bad.

This just happens to be the latest example.
