News Daniel Craig signs up for Bond 25, Christopher Nolan in talks to direct

Yes, but this is the end of the line for Craig's run after more than a decade. Elba would be starting at around 50 if he took over. Don't get me wrong, I would've loved to see Elba's take but the timing is off.

The only way I could see it working is if they went with a storyline that this is towards the end of Bond's career, but that's not going to have much legs and I don't think they'll want to do that and then have to recast again in relatively short order.

I've liked the suggestions in this thread that perhaps it's time to return to the basics (except the overt sexism, that can stay in the past). I've loved how the Craig era has turned against the tropes and I think his run has been very enjoyable (except Sceptre), but I think it's time to change things up again.

Granted, Idris may really be too old to helm the franchise for another 10 years.

I'd love it if they made a good reboot, Casino Royale is my favorite Bond movie exactly for that reason and if they find the right crew for it i'm all for it.

I’m very curious as to how they address the next recast. Before Craig, there was never really any suggestion that the new actor was anything other than the previous guy (Lazenby’s tongue-in-cheek “this never happened to the other fella” aside, and anyway, it’s balanced out by a later scene where he reminisces on some of Connery’s adventures). Lazenby and Moore had the same Moneypenny, M and Q as their predecessor and only when Dalton took over did Lois Maxwell retire (same Q and M remained, however, though there had been a recast of M during Moore’s tenure). However, Dalton’s Bond was clearly meant to be a jaded veteran agent.

With Brosnan we got a new Moneypenny and M, though in-universe M was clearly meant to be new to the job. Same Q. Brosnan was also meant to have been around for a while, given the flashback to 9 years earlier (which, intentionally or not, took us to 1986, the year between Moore’s swansong and Dalton’s debut).

So only with Craig did we get a clear origin story with 007, which subsequent movies have expanded on, Skyfall and Spectre in particular delving into his youth. (Dench famously remained on as M, because the producers and audience liked her so much). I wonder will the next actor be intended to be a continuation of Craig’s Bond, surrounded by the excellent supporting cast of Fiennes, Kinnear etc or will it be a total reboot? Or could it be somewhere in between? They kept Dench on as M with CR, as I said, but with audiences more into continuity etc than in the Connery-Moore era, might they just go for a total do-over, like Batman, Spider-Man and so many others have seen in the recent past.

My head cannon is that (prior to Craig) they were all the same man, just different iterations that changed with the years, and everything that'd happened to a previous incarnation happened to them, only slightly differently. So Lazenby battled Dr No, Roge cradled Tracy in his arms, Dalton went into space and Brosnan battled Latin American drug lords, and this holds true with both Moore and Daton referencing Tracy's death (several times in Roger's case). 007 as a fresh young agent was something they'd wanted to do since before Dalton I believe, and that's fine, but the downside is that Craig goes from wet behind the years novice to grizzled old agent ready to be put out to pasture in the space of just 3 films! The Bond in CR and QoS never lost Tracy, but I'm not so sure that's true of the Bond in Skyfall, he owns Goldfinger's DB5 FFS!

I'd say something in between. Given the somewhat tight continuity shared with the Craig films* I'd expect the next Bond will break away from that continuity, but they'll still keep the MI5 support players like M, Q, Moneypenny and Tanner. Assuming the actors want to return, of course.

*Yeah, I know, Spectre rather hamfisted itself and Skyfall into being connected with Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, but it's there now.

I really like the idea of Malek as the baddie, especially since it would seem to confirm Waltz definitely isn't coming back!

It’ll be interesting to see, if he’s cast, what sort of villain Malek plays, as he has made it clear he doesn’t want to play the stereotype Arabic/Muslim villain again (having appeared in that sort of role in 24).

IT occurred to me too that he'll be the first non-European (main) baddie for Craig. He's faced a Dane, a Frenchman, a Spaniard and an Austrian (or is waltz German?).

I blame Brexit. ;)

^ Not sure any of Craig's villains have been apolitical arms dealers?
Le Chiffre is a banker/financier
Green specialises in coups
Silva is a computer hacker
Blofeld is the head of an organisation that, well, seems to do everything, so yeah there's probably some arms dealing in there but they seem mostly concerned with sex trafficking and spying on everyone.

^^ Couple of things on the villain front, firstly the nationality of the actor doesn't always correspond to the nationality of the character. Le Chiffre is Albanian not Danish, and though it isn't specifically mentioned I believe Silva to be Central/South American, and of course Toby Stephens is North Korean ;)

More notably the majority of Bond villains have been played by European actors, off the top of my head Malek will be the first non European actor to play the main Bond villain since Robert Davi in Licence to Kill (unless you want to be really pedantic and count Will Yun Lee playing Colonel Moon for a couple of minutes at the start of Die Another Day I guess.)

For terrorists/Quantum/SPECTRE... close enough.

Green specialises in coups
Which usually require weapons... close enough.

Silva is a computer hacker
And terrorist with lots of weapons... Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

No doubt.

The point, however, is that all of these baddies are apolitical: none of them have any ideology; they're just looking for cash by financing/sponsoring other, mostly unnamed baddies', political aims. So, instead of compelling, driven antagonists, we get punch-clock arms dealers and random former allies with incomprehensible and/or stupid vendettas against M/Bond. And, ever since III and Furious 6, respectively, the Mission: Impossible and Fast & Furious franchises have given us nothing but the same thing. (Say what you like about M:I-2's Sean Ambrose, at least he was willing to work on his own dastardly plot/get rich quick scheme.)

But this is hardly new, most Bond villains don't have an ideology beyond 'make money'. Hell SPECTRE spent most of the sixties working for hire. You have to wait for Stromberg and Drax to get Bond villains with an ideology beyond financial, however skewed that ideology is. The obvious exception is Blofeld's vanity in wanting a pardon and to be a count
