News Daniel Craig signs up for Bond 25, Christopher Nolan in talks to direct

I really hope they bring in some new writing talent. Between Purvis, Wade, and Feirstein -- and John Fucking Logan -- the Bond writing pool has been a little too cliquish for the last ~30 years.

I think the script is written by Boyle and John Hodge, who's worked with Boyle on "Shallow Grave", "Trainspotting", "A Life Less Ordinary", "The Beach", "Trance", and "T2 Trainspotting".

Im not a fan of Craig's brutish Bond but I enjoyed Skyfall and thought it was the best Bond film since the underrated Licence To Kill. I just want to see a tight 110 minute espionage thriller like say, Dr. No, one of my favorite Bond films.

In fairness they did try to freshen things up, that's why they brought Logan in to work on Skyfall, then gave him Spectre to do on his own, only he cocked it up (or had it cocked up) which meant Purvis and Wade had to be parachuted back in to salvage it...and then Jez Butterworth was parachuted in to try and salvage what they'd done (and fuck knows how many other screenwriters might have had a dabble).

Logan is a strange one, he's done some terrible stuff, but Penny Dreadful was genuinely very good. I do wonder sometimes whether the problem isn't that the studios give then such a laundry list of requirements that it's hard for anyone to do a truly good job. I think Casino Royale and Skyfall both worked because they spent so long polishing them (and they still both have issues)

While laundry lists often can and do hamper movies, it should be noted that in the early 2000s after Gladiator, John Logan more or less had free reign on the scripts he wrote with very little studio oversight, which was the case with Star Trek Nemesis. The only thing he was requested to include there was Data's death, and that came from Brent Spiner rather than the studio. My point is, even without studio interference, Logan can still turn out some subpar scripts.

But I agree, he is an unusual writer who seems to turn out quality and crap on an equal basis.

Well, usually anything of "quality" was the result of others' rewrites. Gladiator, for example. You can find his original script online. It has very little in common with the film.

The guy is -- and always has been -- a hanger-on and hack.

... I guess I need to give Spectre another whirl.

You really don't.
OK, I just did. Can you, or anyone, explain how Bond can get surgically precise holes drilled in his head that don't have the effect Blofeld predicted they would?

Spectre wanted to be the GCHQ and Blofeld is Bond's adopted brother. There, saved you two and a half hours of your life.
I appreciate both of your efforts to spare me. I probably should have listened.

I'm glad Craig is back, I've enjoyed all of his films in various degrees. If I were to rank them it would be

Casino Royale
Spectre
Skyfall
Quantum of Solace.

But they aren't without faults. The first two felt refreshing with it's darker take on Bond. A return to what Fleming wrote on the page is welcome. But the last two took that darker take and spun it on it's head and turned it into soapy melodrama. Making Blofeld, Bond's foster Brother was the worst thing since Colonel Moon getting magic plastic surgery to become Gustav Graves. And I hope to god Thomas Newman doesn't return to score Bond 25. I want Bond scores to be memorable and awesome. Not bland, boring, unmemorable and themeless. Remember when Bond movies actually used the Bond theme outside of the end credits?

I hope Boyle delivers a solid Bond film. New blood is welcome right now.

It's been a while since I've seen the movie (and I have no desire to revisit it), so I don't recall the details of Blofeld's torture procedure precisely, but the brain can survive and fully or mostly recover from some pretty serious trauma.

His recovery was pretty instantaneous....
Did you see the one where the guy had a giant nail lodged in his brain and thought he was just having really bad headaches for months? How would you even tell with moody Bond? He always looks like he's having migraines. And if drinking numbs the pain, he's already got that covered in spades, so how would you know the difference? ;)

Oooooohhhhhh.

I would agree except he practically wrote every episode of Penny Dreadful, and PD is (IMO) very, VERY good.

Damn, that's really disappointing. :(

If it was truly for creative differences, then I worry that they want a yes man and not someone truly creative, which doesn't bold well for the film.
