News Daniel Craig signs up for Bond 25, Christopher Nolan in talks to direct

^ And who could blame him?!

If I were as rich as Craig, and had such an amazing wife, I'd have a pretty astronomical price for an arduous-foreign-shoot-plus-publicity obligation, too. :p (And that's not even factoring in their kids and families.)

If I were as rich as DC is now, and if I genuinely hated being Bond, I'd tell them to stick it. Either he's incredibly greedy (or incredibly philanthropic and he donates the whole fee) or else he actually enjoys the role more than he lets on.

I realise some people can never be rich enough, but he could just do indie films the rest of his career and still live a lavish lifestyle.

It seems that a few people ACT like they are thinking of quitting a role sometimes just to have a better bargaining position for the next contract...........maybe I am jaded. ;-)

By this logic, the fact that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 entered active development, with multiple scripts drafts written and casting negotiations undertaken, should have been taken as confirmation, as late as December 2009, that that movie was happening. Mind lending me your DVD of SM4 for a few days? ;)
I'd say get your own copy :). In all seriousness, its different starting something and then cancelling it in preproduction, than never starting at all. For all we know a deal will be struck (if it hasn't already and they're just waiting for the right moment to announce it) and six months from now DC pulls out of it before shooting starts. It doesn't change that a deal was or is being done and thats all thats being talked about now, DC has agreed to return once (possibly twice) more to play 007. Six months from now, who knows.

CONIRMATION
"Yes," Craig told Colbert point-blank, when asked if he will return as the secret agent. He said he's known he would reprise the role for "a couple of months" now. "We've been discussing it, we've just been trying to figure things out," he explained, adding, "I always wanted to, I needed a break."

He also confirmed that it would be the last time he would tackle the iconic role, saying, "I just want to go out on a high note, and I can't wait."

Well, at least he recognizes that SPECTRE was not a high note.

Casino Royale was probably my favourite Bond movie, and coming from an aging Connery devotee that's praise indeed.

He's certainly the right Bond, but I have doubts they will be capable of making the movie he deserves without a Fleming original to adapt.

Fingers crossed...

Edit : maybe it's time to use the plot from The Spy Who Loved Me novel, as they only used the title for the Moore film...

I am a huge Connery fan as well and I enjoy Craig......I like to be able to believe Bond would actually KILL ME without blinking an eye. Some of the others were just toooooooo smooth IMO. Skyfall was my favorite of the current crop I think.

But there's a reason they only used the title. The book was so atypical Bond (told from the first person POV of the love interest) that the critics slated in and Fleming said Eon could only use the title, nothing else. I suppose the question is whether that still stands? In addition, much as I actually enjoyed the novel, the plot's wafer thin and just involves some thugs menacing a young woman in an off season country motel. It might make for an intriguing pre title sequence (especially if they skip the oh so obvious OHMSS homage they clearly want to do) and just have a broken Bond show up reeling from Madeline dying, but I think they'd have trouble constructing a film out of it.

I think using Dr Shatterhand and the notion of his death garden could be outstanding, and unlike anything we've seen Bond encounter before. That's about the only things left from the Bond canon they haven't done (other than maybe 007 brainwashed into trying to kill M from the start of The Man With the Golden Gun) They've even used Bond in New York which seemed to inform the epilogue for Quantum of Solace.

Titles still unused. Risico? (sounds like a western) or Property of a Lady (lacks impact) or Bond in New York(lame) I think.

I just want it to be better (or at least more consistent than Spectre)

If I recall correctly, at the start of the novel Bond has just completed a mission. Showing that mission could be the 'big opening'. Following that with a smaller, intense chase/survival movie based on the novel could be great.

Smaller? They're not going to do that. Just look how much they had to beef up the action quotient for Casino Royale and that book has more going on than TSWLM

Smaller as in closed, more focussed, more intense.

From my earlier idea, there would still be a mission of scale at the beginning. And it would require a somewhat bigger resolution at the end too.

Two Bond set pieces bookending the 'on the train bit' of From Russia With Love for example...

Yes it could work as part of a story, I'm just not sure there's quite enough of a hook there compared to something like the train bit of FRWL, you'd probably have to switch it up from two bit hoodlums planning to burn a hotel down for the insurance money, and if you were doing that anyway you might as well change location because the backwoods of America doesn't sing 007 (what do people think to the argument that Bond and America never quite seems like a good fit, I've heard a few people say that over the years?) and if you're changing the location and the villains what's left?

What I'd definitely co-opt is the woman from TSWLM, but then some of my favourite Bond girls tend to be the ordinary woman caught up in Bond's mission by accident rather than those involved on a more official level (Tracy/Kara Natalia over XXX/Jinx/Vesper) though there are good and bad examples of all of them.
