Yeah, as much as I love Oliver Reed the actor, Oliver Reed the person was...difficult to put it mildly.

He certainly had the physicality for the role.

Sadly I bet we would have gotten a moment/scene where James Bond looks visibly drunk while he's storming Blofeld's compound.

"How did he get so red faced when there's no drink in sight?"

    >_>

James Bond is a timeless character. That character being played by a POC and/or a woman would be perfectly fine, and would do nothing but enhance the story.

The timelessness of the character is arguable. James Bond can also be seen as a personification of anachronistic imperialism and jingoism, as well as "a sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War."
And I say this as a long-time Bond fan.

Wouldn't the character being played by a POC, say one from a former British colony, be a way of erasing a bit of that history?

That reminds me, I need to watch Bridgerton. I heard Page was really good in that.

Therapod dinosaurs adapted to the changing world around them and gradually evolved into birds, so perhaps this sexist, misogynist dinosaur can adapt beyond his Cold War origins to survive in a new world and become something more. I would think the ornithologist James Bond got his name from would appreciate the analogy.

I watched the first few episodes and it just didn’t work for me. Not really my thing, TBH. He’s undeniably charismatic, however.

I'd argue that we were seeing Bond become less sexist and misogynistic during the Brosnan years, but then they totally reversed course and you see Craig's Bond exhibit a level of sadism towards women (particularly in Casino Royale and Skyfall) that rivals some of the cringiest moments from the early films.

James Bond is a government controlled saboteur, assassin, and terrorist. For every woman he's used and discarded, he's ruthlessly killed a dozen men. I expect nothing else from him. He's a functional sociopath who has no need for human connections or emotional contact, other than for the thrill of the hunt. To argue that he is a misogynist is to ignore his manipulation, sadism, and murder of men as though that's all ok.

That said, I have fun watching the Craig Bond movies. That doesn't mean I aspire to being a misanthrope.

And then in Casino Royale, when Judi Dench's M was exasperated with Craig's Bond, she said "Christ, I miss the Cold War."
