Daedalus Size / Window-Size

There are windows are least at 8 different levels on the Daedalus model, ergo, at minimum the sphere would be 8 decks tall.

That doesn't necessarily hold true for all starships, though. The TOS Enterprise had strangely staggered windows on the saucer rim, interpreted as describing just a single deck (and perhaps some sort of a stairwell along its rim?) in most works. Even the TNG hero ship had ambiguities as to how many decks corresponded to how many rows of saucer windows, at least once the Ten-Forward was introduced.

But yeah, eight decks would look like a minimum for the sphere-and-can ship. She could be much larger, though, considering the somewhat uneven spacing of those portholes, and the low number of them - with such sparse spacing horizontally, it's also vertically possible that only one deck in three or four would have windows!

But when you consider that a good chunk of the NX's length is nacelles, the Daedalus can be smaller and still be 'competitive.'
True, the NX Class is just a ''saucer'' and nacelles!:vulcan:

I'm a fan of the 131 Meter Daedalus my self!:techman:

I agree, miraclefan. The NX is 225 meters long, but only about 135 of that is the saucer, and the catamarans are essentially only there for the 'plasma accelerators' right? So basically the saucer is the ship's bulk. With Daedalus, almost the whole length is inhabitable ship.

I like the idea that the Daedalus is clunky because it has a bigger reactor that negates the need for the plasma accelerator setup.

I should do a layover comparison of the 131 meter D to the NX. And here it is:

Just a guesstimate on the scaling. The Daedalus seems tiny next to the NX! Not that I really mind.

The length of around 100 m is taken from a picture in the encyclopedia showing the side views of all Starfleet ships. To calculate the length, one has to measure the image of Daedalus, which is really small, and compare it to ships of known length, such as Galaxy or Constitution. As such, the length could be off by 5 m or more either way. Here's a chart of possible lengths I made a few years ago when a guy at Starship Modeler was trying to decide how large to make a master for a proposed kit. I think 131 m looks best. By the way, the volume of the 100-m Daedalus is only about 25,000 m^3 (if I remember correctly), about an eighth of that of Constitution.

Masao, do you have a larger version of this image posted somewhere? I thought i had it in my Trek folder but apparently not. I am re-imaging Daedalus-derivatives by era, Pre-TOS, TOS, TMP, TNG & beyond.
As for scaling i concur with the stipulated length of 140 meters presented in http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/articles/daedalus-problems.htm & adopted in Issue #100 of the Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection.

In my current headcanon, the 104-meter Daedalus is now my Cygnus-class, and i am making a 180-meter Europa-class for TOS & 220-meter Rhea-class for TOS/TMP, & a tbd at 260 meters for TMP/TNG. I had notes for these variants (131, 157 & 209-meter) you came up with; if those notes don't turn up by year's end i'll do over.

Given that this thread has been dormant for ages, I'm going to close it. You're welcome to start a new one if you wish, though. :)
