Cyfa's art challenges and other bits & bobs

Unless I get distracted, I'm going to have a go at more detailed individual sketches of Ketwek and Misil (from lower left of the December 30th photo), and also the spherical hulled Rosecrypt (lower left of the upper right sheet of paper from the same photo).

OK, so I got distracted, waylaid, interrupted et al... Still, I managed to find a few minutes to come up with a quick-and-dirty sketch of an alternate universe Starfleet uniform for this month's Art Challenge as set by @DeMilburn :

Feb%2B2018%2BArt%2BChallenge%2B-%2BAlternative%2BTrek.jpg

The uniforms are an unlikely combination of the 2260s Romulan Star Empire service uniform, the 2270s-2290s Starfleet "Monster Maroons", and the 2370s Starfleet standard duty uniform. The rank insignia are my own design as exquisitely modelled by @Scribble
They came about in a universe in which Torias Dax didn't die in the Infinity transwarp test shuttle accident (because transwarp worked - not the space salamander version, just a significantly faster & more efficient warp drive) and the Romulans ended up joining the Federation (just in time to save it from a massive Borg incursion - but that's another story).
Romulan models, T'Cael and Ry'iak are named after characters featured in Final Frontier by Diane Carey.

I enjoyed all of the "Giant" Trek books, including "Final Frontier".

Love this uniform design and I'd like to see it developed and other views.

^ I keep meaning to re-read Final Frontier, as it's been a few years (decades?) since I last read it, and I really loved it. However, I've just looked on my book shelf and can't see it! I'm hoping it's just in a box somewhere...

As for the uniform, if tomorrow turns into another "snow day" I'll have a go at a more refined version.

After a busy month with both my family and my blog, I'm just starting to get back into a bit of Trek art. Since coming up with the 2260s Romulan style inspired 2370s Starfleet uniform up there ^, I've pondered a 2370s update to the 2250s Discovery uniform:

2370s%2Bupdate%2Bto%2BDiscovery%2Buniforms.jpg

This is just a quick sketch to show basic design and colours. Our models today are Commander Marcelino (named after the Grissom comms officer actor in ST III) and Lt. j. g. zh'Ithpirin of the communications starship USS D'Hennish (named after this Cool Cat).

On the "To Do" list are: development of the Romulan/DS9 uniform, and a transforming Oberth-class starship for this month's Art Challenge.

I've just realised that the off-kilter shoulder quilting and the piping along the other shoulder of the preceding uniform makes it look too much like the 29th century Starfleet uniforms from VGR: Relativity. I'm going to have to change them now (also, my original design notes were for a rusty bronze shoulder, not grey).
But, until I get around to those amendments, here's what I've got so far for this month's Art Challenge:

The first idea: An Oberth-class starship that transforms into Autobot siblings.

Some cut-outs and very rough sketches to work out what moves where in the transformation sequence (the primary hull & nacelles "brother" is looking a little dumpy...):

This morning's effort - the secondary hull "sister" was supposed to be in a fighting pose, but looked more like she was dancing, so I popped a drink in her hand and imagine she's tearing up the dancefloor at somebody's wedding. Her "brother" is running up to remove her before she causes an embarrassing incident (I've changed his bridge-dome-and-vanes torso into a shield to lessen the dumpiness - and a shield is handy as it may stop him from getting covered in his sister's drink!).

I'm not sure how I feel about Transformers having sexes, but for the purpose of this challenge, I'm going to go with it.

yep see the big square shoulders and the cube knit look of the romulan style.
Also very late 80s too which is why that sort of style was prevalent during the romulan uniform in the making of tng
- Heh, yes! Those TNG Romulan shoulder pads were ridiculously oversized - even for the 80s! I prefer a more "Dynasty" look - still big, but with sequins and other embellishments

That's great! I love this already. :)

The cut-outs looks splendid :-D
And also really like the shape of that last drawing. Cool stuff.:)

There is a nice sense of movement in both characters, really like that!=)

- Thanks, @pl1ngpl0ng . I think it's a bit of a fluke though, as normally my characters are pretty stiff and awkward, so I googled (well, Bing-ed, actually) male & female running poses but got so sick-to-death of only finding coupley or sexualised figures that I gave up and free-handed it.

Anyway, here's what will almost certainly be my final entry:

This is Autobot Kizzy tearing up the dancefloor to the stimthump hit "Socks Match My Hat". Her 'brother', Jenks, is rushing on to save her from embarrassing herself (but mostly him).* He may also - inadvertently - prevent her from smushing-to-smithereens the Decepticon spy, Feinberg.

* "Kizzy", "Jenks", and "Socks Match My Hat" are from a wonderful book I've just read (for the third time) - anyone recognise it?

It's not a fluke when you studying movement and then free hand it!
Also great little bug-bot:-) I'm not familiar with the characters you are referring to tho... my first thought was that autobotKizzy was a play on Gene Simmons lol:)

As I somehow managed to get my entry for this month's art challenge completed a few days before the deadline, I've had time to continue messing around with alternate uniform designs.
The sketches below are just some ideas for colour and style:

Starfleet Supernatural Operations doesn't exist, of course. Starfleet Occult Operations, on the other hand...

I love this, @Cyfa! Especially the cute professionally-looking Narwhal officer. One can always count on something out of the ordinary with your work. Cool!

Thanks, @Michael! I'm not quite sure why a narwhal officer would need a uniform (other than for ease of recognition), or how he'd put it on, but it was a fun little sketch.

The Romulan redesign is really neat and brings to my mind an idea of trying to craft a mash up of Elvish and Starfleet.

Just musings, it's still cool.

Also, uniforms on non-humanoids has always been a part of Starfleet, since TNG suggested dolphins ;)
