Cushman's New Book

Neil, you are my hero.

Granted I haven't read them, and I enjoy a good "legal console" joke as much as the next guy; but he must really dig Star Trek to be doing all this.

What's the legal console joke?

Also - I think I will eliminate these books from my shelves. I was never really all that impressed with them BEFORE I came here and was substantially educated about all of Cash's flaws. What should I do with them? Donating them seems wrong somehow.

Donating them is only a worthy cause if its to someone working on a book designed to debunk / expose all of the inaccuracies of Cushman's rags.

Other than that, it would fine to let the "circular file cabinet" have it.

If you self-publish you get a much bigger cut. It's all about promotion and sales.

Unless you're part of a known series like our esteemed writers here, your sales are all up to your own hustling and promotion. True even if you have a bricks and mortar publisher, according to the authors I know. A friend with a "real" publisher, someone who produced for Oprah amd had a syndicated radio show, held up his book, and said, "Phil, this is a $15.99 calling card." Meaning, don't quit your day job. Which I didn't, ha ha!

Cash is on Amazon. Probably not in bricks and mortar (basically B&N anymore); no great loss there.
I think he's in university libraries, based on his being referenced in academic papers. He's got heavy hitters who know and endorse him.

My little book gets me 11 of the $15 sales price in person, where I am publisher, wholesaler and retailer combined, only paying for cost of good.

It fetches 6 out of 15 on Amazon (more or less they're buying it at the typical wholesale price (60% discount from cover price) then selling it as they wish.) Cash self-publishing should get about the same cuts. You do the math. Maybe he's paying a promoter/publicist.

(Don't know the kindle cut. I labored really hard on page and photo formatting and didn't want a kindle messin that up. Probably left money on the table.)

tl;dr: If they're selling he's doing ok. He seems like a hustler (I mean that as a compliment). "Ok" varies according to the hearer. Enough to live off of? Doubt it, though they'll have a long catalog life (perennial interest) as opposed to a current topic whose interest will fade.

I believe this was from something I posted a while ago -- on Cushman's publishing company's website, one of the staff people was identified in her bio as the company's "legal console" (should be legal counsel).

They seemed to be not quite real people.

Just look at the page! Among the supposed staff, there's a picture of the back of Cushman's head (he's listed as "Matthew Williams Brown II") and a picture of a cat.

The classic "legal console" doesn't appear to be on this version of the page. I'll leave it for some other intrepid soul to crawl through the internet archive to see if they can find that one.

Thanks! Had a feeling it was going to be something like that, unfortunately.
