crowd-response reports (SPOILERS)

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

I think it's more interesting to look at the makeup of the crowd.

I went to the midnight Melbourne IMAX opening and noticed the following:

- No children at all. Perhaps reasonable on a school night, but I don't think there were even teenagers there.
- Maybe 10-15% women.
- Probably 15 in costume, some TNG, some TOS movie-era and some great homemade Enterprise outfits.
- I only saw one non-Caucasian out of about 500 people, which is just astonishing.
- Probably an average age of early 30s - don't remember any older (50+) people.

As for the reactions, mostly positive with plenty of laughs at the right moments. There was a distinct lack of reaction to Vulcan's fate.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

I saw i tonight and there was laughter, loud and long lasting applause and whistles at the end.

There was even someone stating as he left the theater that "the franchise is safe!"

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

The theater I went to was pretty packed and there were a lot of people there more than thirty minutes before the movie started. I'm nearly thirty...I would say a lot of the audience consisted of people older than me. They loved the movie, laughing and applauding several times. One person said at the end "Star Wars is better" but was ignored.

The crowd went nuts when Leonard Nimoy came on screen

I just got back from the first screening in my area of "Star Trek"

I am very pleased to report that the audience went NUTS when Leonard Nimoy came on screen. His introdcution was fit for a hero. Loud whoops and cheers followed his introduction.

Granted this was clearly a "Star Trek" audience (several people where dressed as TOS characters) in the sold out first showing.

A couple of lines of dialogue really hit home. A women seated next to me started sobbing at one point. She kind of scared the hell out of me when she did, but whatever.

Seeing Leonard Nimoy as Spock was like seeing an old long lost friend. Well, I guess you could say I did get to see a long lost friend tonight and I am very happy becasue of it.

STAR TREK LIVES!!!!!!!!!!

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Saw the 7PM show. Wound up going to a larger multiplex because the local theaters did not have the "sneak peek" on Thurs. I think most people think the movie opens on Friday, which is why the theater (one of 2 showing the film) was 3/4 full instead of full I think.

The crowd was mostly males--three of them being my 2 friends and I--with some fairly vocal females. The crowd seemed pretty knowledgeable, they talked when an inside joke or reveal of a familiar face appeared. They laughed at the right places but mostly I sensed awe...like "this is a Star Trek" movie? A lot of the crowd stayed after the credits--which were the best ever in Trek btw.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Hadley, MA: the theater was packed, with a very happy crowd. Spock got tears and applause. Cheers for the Enterprise. Laughs aplenty, especially for Kirk and Scotty. Plenty of cheers for "I'm giving it all she's got," "Fascinating," and "Damn it, Jim." No exclamations from disgruntled fanboys, which I was fearing.

Re: The crowd went nuts when Leonard Nimoy came on screen

My wife and I have seen it twice (last night and tonight) and in both cases, Old Spock got a positive reaction from the audience when he turned to face the camera.

Definitely a great moment. His scenes were among the best in the film, IMO.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Hollywood Florida, Muvico Paradise 24 multiplex. One theater sold out for 7 pm showing, so they opened up a second auditorium, the one I was in.

People filled up second auditorium to about 85% full. People laughed in all the right places, loved it when Nimoy appeared, and were amazed at effects and laughed in all the right places. Pegg stole the show. Pine did his thing, too. Everyone hit their marks. People were drawn into the movie and stayed with it.

Audience applauded at the end and most stayed for credits. As I was walking out, I saw a line for the 10:00 showing.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

I was at the same midnight Melbourne IMAX session as donners22, and agree with the demographics.

The 'buzz' from the crowd as we left the theatre was extremely positive, people were smiling, saying how much they loved it. I went with eight other friends, four of whom were complete Trek n00bs, the other four of whom were various levels of fan, and they ALL loved it. I am probably the biggest Trekkie they know and I was a bit more guarded. I think I need to see it again to know if I liked it or not.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Good amount of people at the local 7pm. Looks like a local company rented out one of the other theaters to show the film. There were also people lined up for later showings when we left.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

No crowd. I don't think there were more than eight people in the theater, perhaps ten.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

The theater I went to had 4 screenings of the film so there weren't large crowds. I would say around 50-60% full at the most. But if there were only 2 or 3 screens showing it would have been pretty full.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

I went to the 7 showing here in Jeff City, MO and it was disappointingly empty. No more than half full, and probably more like 33% full. Pretty quiet crowd, not much laughter, not much anything.

I don't know if I can read anything into that or not, I'd like to rationalize it by saying it was Thursday and a lot of people probably didn't know it started tonight since the ads are all saying May 8. So it's probably not a proper guage of the movie, but still it was surprising.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Saw it in IMAX here in Woodbridge VA at 7.

Sold out. Bunch of people my age (23) mostly males. Some older people tho and some people had TOS uniforms on.

One lady had a redshirt TOS shirt that read "expendable"

Everyone laughed, EVERYONE clapped when it finished.

I think Trek is back people.

Damn cant wait for a TV show.

Lines for the 10pm showing for reg and IMAX when I was leaving.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Went to IMAX in Deer Park NY. House was FULL 20 mins before the time. Mostly people my age (Late 20s) with a decent amount of TOS aged fans. No one in costume as far as I could tell, but a ton, including me had Trek shirts.

Crowd Applauded a bunch of lines and at the end. A good crowd overall. As we left it looked like there were even more people if possible waiting for the later showings.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

CarMike Cinema in Eau Claire WI.

7:00PM Showing - The 1st of 2 for the night.

Showing on 2 screens, both were half full. The 9:40 showing though had both theaters sold out.

Crowd reaction was mostly laughs. No clapping. Some stayed till the end of the credits.

Crowd had parents with kids and lots of 20-50. I saw one lady who must have been 70+ but that was it.

Noone was dressed up, but I myself was wearing a Mr. Spork T-shirt from woot. I got a few comments....

Overall, pretty good showing here in Eau Claire, WI.

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Oh yes, there were a few fans in dress for the 9:30 showings as we walked out of the theater. There were also longer lines than the 7PM showing. I was surprised to see Star Trek toys and collectibles being sold outside the theater!

Re: crowd reports (SPOILERS)

Indy - 7 PM showing in IMAX.

Full house, sold out according to theater manager.

Sniff, cry, clap in right places.

Mostly the crowd drank it in. I think I was the only negative nelly in attendance.

My review is now up on my website (see link below).
