crowd-response reports (SPOILERS)

I went for a Tuesday matinee to an IMAX showing in Orlando, and the theatre was 60-70% filled, and there was lots of clapping at the end, with occasional laughter at the appropriate points. Several people stayed till the end to see if there was anything after the credits. Sadly not, though I loved the grand theme music and the dedication to the Roddenberrys.

I went to see in on Saturday night, it was on in the main screen of the cinema with only 25% of it filled, possibly less. The audience laughed only once during the movie, during McCoy's "I'm a doctor..." line, the rest of the time it was silent. During the applause scene at the end a teenager in front of me started clapping seemingly trying to get the rest of us to join in, but we gave him negative vibes to inform him that we didn't think the movie was worthy of applause and he stopped after 3 or 4 claps. It was pretty funny.

Maybe the cinema I watched the movie in wasn't filled with die-hard Trekkies - at least that could explain why there was little reaction to Spock's "I have always been..." line.

But the whole crowd was practically howling with laughter with Chekov's "Wictor-Wictor", combined with Kirk delirious numb-tongued ramblings about Romulans. I certainly had tears of laughter streaming down my cheeks, I was laughing so hard.

Crowd reaction in my third viewing: Quieter and older crowd this time for a 4:30 matinee. It was maybe 1/3rd full after the movie has been in theaters for 8 days. There were some laughs, some oos and ahs but mostly no huge outbursts. At the end, the crowd surprised me by clapping!

My sister and nephew both loved it. My sis said it was a GREAT, fun movie and my nephew said it was the best movie ever (he's 9 yrs old). He plans on his mom buying more happy meals and the USS Enterprise.

RAMA

20-odd people at a 1:10pm Sunday afternoon screening. There were two kids among those, and I was probably the next-youngest at 25. It was a similar story at the original screening as well, which is a concern.

The reactions made it clear that there were only about three hardcore fans in the audience, though there were a handful of laughs from the rest.
