Cringe Trek

I will never get some people's hangup regarding the word "fuck" and its derivations. I mean, it's fine, but I just don't get it. It's just a word that, if used as an adjective, hurts nobody. So what? I'm with Eric Cartman on that one. Maybe I'm just too European. We all swear like sailors. So no cringing from yours truly over any o' that stuff.

It doesn't scare me. What I didn't like was the gimmicky way they did it. Obvious gimmick is obvious.

This is honestly probably the only time I've ever involuntarily cringed, but if I had to pick some Trek moments:

TOS: The Alternative Factor, The ending of Metamorphosis, 90% of S3
TNG: CODE OF HONOR, Rascals, Relics, anbo-jyutsu
DS9: Move Along Home, The Skrrean*, Vic Fontaine**
VOY: I don't even know where to begin
ENT: DECON CHAMBER, Mayweather's whole existence, the augment virus/soong storylines
DIS: A lot of S1 Klingon dialogue, most fight scenes without Michelle Yeoh, 'defcon level', AND HOW ARE MICHAEL'S WIGS SO BAD IN SEASON 2 WHAT THE FUCK

*minus, of course, Andrew Koenig RIP
**JK JK I love Vic
every time a Star Trek writer attempts anything they consider "humorous" or "sexy"
Any time we actually see oo-mox is the perfect example of them trying to do both and failing miserably

Um I personally find the mere existence of the character Tilly from Discovery as cringe Trek.

I hated her character at first. But she sort of grew on me. And she has one of the most awesome lines ever in one of the mirror universe episodes when she says "If I were your captain I'd cut out your tongue and use it to lick my boots" That made up for a lot of the early season annoyingness from her character

The episode where Wesley fell on some flowers and was sentenced to death.

Kor

The most cringeworthy thing about the episode is that they didn't carry out the sentence

Ok, I kid, I kid.

Though I did read once someone came up with an idea for a TNG movie---that Wesley dies horribly then gets stuck in a time loop so that it happens over and over again.

Sadistic, yes, but perhaps deserving :nyah:

American here who also doesn't really get the whole 'sensitive to foul language' deal. Maybe it's a Protestant thing?
Thanks for the reply! I lived in Lake Orion, MI for a while, and they were all very sensitive to that kind of thing. You may be on to something. As a philologist, I think the difference between denotation and denotation is really interesting.

Tilly is great.

Most of these cringe moments are moments I genuinely enjoy, if only because I love it when Star Trek gets ridiculous and cheesy.

Sulu-- "Stop or I'll shoot! I don't want to have to kill a woman!!!" That Which Survives

Kirk-- "Her life could have been as rich as any woman's, if only. If only." Turnabout Intruder

Men wearing skirts in the first season of TNG.

Love Instructors -- I never read the TMP novel, but word has it that it has a ton of cringe.

Burnham's hair goes through various looks in her life, so what. I've had more hair styles than Bowie. I never noticed her hair looking out of place. I must find a way to connect my streaming service to a microscope.
The idea of time cops is somewhat cringe worthy, but not as cringe worthy as hair police. She always looks terrific.

"Let me show you something that will make you feel young, as when the world was new."
Nurse Chapel serving ice cream sundaes.
Mudd's love potion making same-sex friends, just friends
Spock making a joke to Rand about the part of Kirk that just tried to rape her.
The way Shatner often said "woman."
That TNG foot massage.
Uhura/Scotty in TFF
Spock screaming "Khaaaaaan" in Into Darkness
Decontamination gel
"Charming Negress."
Most of "Plato's Stepchildren," including the Famous Kiss That's Oddly Famous Seeing As It Wasn't Consensual
The ending of "Bread and Circuses"
About 80 percent of the portrayals of the Irish
Those times that the McCoy-Spock banter just goes a little over the edge into, "wait, I thought these guys were friends?"
Neelix
