This is a pretty controversial episode some people love it, some people hate it.

I like it but it's very frustrating viewing.
How so?
They all die and all evidence they ever existed is lost. I remember watching it hoping, hoping that at least they'd get to send their logs to the real Voyager.
I'd say its one of Trek's darkest episodes makes DS9 look happy.
I agree that this is a depressing episode but it has its own charm (but which VOY ep doesn't? 
). The feeling of togetherness is there, how they are trying to help each other against impossible odds. You know, the whole process of discovering what's going on, conducted by Chakotay and Tuvok, who had established just a few episodes before that they were not exactly friends (NIGHT). Janeway's unrelenting desire to get her crew home and how the crew follow her order even if they don't agree endear this episode to me.
Also how the fake characters are similar to their real selves, Janeway wanting to get home even if it's not the logical thing to do - at least from the others' perspectives -, how Chakotay stands up to her, how his death shatters Janeway, how Tom behaves rebelliously but ultimately plays along ... In short, the episode has this typical VOY feel to it which I love about the whole show.
Oh, and VOY gets criticized for so many things, two of the most often cited things being how Chakotay is soft and never stands up to Janeway and also how there's no continuity, i.e. what happens in an episode has no further consequences. Here's an episode that's at variance with both claims, which I don't agree with in the first place.
All in all, a sad but very Voyager-like episode. 5 out of 5 stars.

I think Voyager does have Continuity heck they reference Tuvix in Homestead briefly mind you.
And to say Chakotay never stands up to Janeway-Scorpion, Equinox being two major examples and Chakotay believe it or not is a fairly peaceable guy and there are times even when he isn't standing down Janeway that you can tell he doesn't agree with or has reservations about her decisions.

I enjoy this episode. Obviously I love the wedding. But I really enjoy the throw back to Demon.
The only thing I've always wondered was where the duplicate ship came from.

When they landed on the planet in the first episode about the demon planet, didn't the ship start sinking in the silver fluid. Perhaps that allowed the sentient whatever to sample the ship to duplicate it.
It was decent, it does really push the boundaries of possibility but if you can get past that then it's a decent little tale with a tragic ending.

I love this episode - top ten at least, probably top five.
By this point I was disillusioned with Voyager and by extension Star Trek. My rabid love for it was evaporating.
But this episode was not only great but importantly it made me feel again... it made me care. And that was precious.
Whispers was the episode that made me love DS9, I think I like the episodes that mean something in a franchise that is inherently reset button each week.

I have honestly never wondered this at all. It was always quite obvious to me that it was never the duplicate crew. For one thing the real Tom was demoted to an ensign and the duplicate was not. So right there whenever you see Tom you know it's not the duplicates
As we all know, one can dissect any episode and find flaws. There are no perfect star trek episodes. (well, maby a couple

Everyone says Janeway should have turned around once she knew.... based on what? These things weren't even sentient until Voyager set down in their goo. This goo was made into Janeway so the initial reaction is more than plausible. She did change her tune, found a Y-Class planet, blah - blah.
The "logical" details are not what this episode is about. This is the ultimate character piece.
Those that like it, I think, do so because they are endeared to these characters. I still to this day get emotional watching our heroes "melt". Neelix's reaction to Janeway's "death" gets me every time. For those that complain that Trek isn't "dark" or "real" enough, this certainly should quench your pallet.
Then no record at all of their existence? So sad. I would have loved to see the real Voyager somehow figure out what happened. It would have been neat for them to recover the capsule, it for a short period.
This is one of those episodes you don't forget because it was so damn heart-wrenching.

it would have really tugged at the heart strings if the real Voyager found the duplicates but at the point where there were only a few people left.

One of my favorite Voyager episodes.
It takes a little suspension of disbelief to accept that they could really have no idea what they were, but once you get past that, it's a very well told story. Also interesting in that they were actually more successful at Voyagering than Voyager, they had a new engine and were damn close to making it home when they started coming apart.
