"Countdown" canon? / "Countdown" Shotdown.

Re: "Countdown" Shotdown.

I know. I was just making a rather lame joke about not being into other guys. It's late here and my brain is "firing on all thrusters". With that, I'm off to catch some zzzzs (or as we call them up here, some zeds ;) ).

Bonne nuit.
Wow, it is late by you.

Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

Just received the Countdown graphic novels today, and can we regard this as being canon or not. I know Orci and Kurtzman have suggested that they may not be in an interview ("The comics are not canon?"), but has there ever been an official word about it being canon or not.

I for one would love to regard it as being canon, if only for making clear the Prime universe still exists.

"Inconsistencies between film and "Countdown" can be explained that the comic is not canon"

Though I think this is just Orci & Kurtzman just covering themselves . I believe at one point prior to the comics' release they stated/implied that it would be canon.

Re: Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

Yeah, I know that interview.

They're saying:

BobOrci: Easy. The comic is not canon?

I think the fact that they ask the question implies that they're not even sure if it's canon or not. But then, WHO decides whether this is canon or not. The Joss Whedon Buffy comics are regarded as an OFFICIAL continuation to the Buffy stories, because Joss said they are. Does JJ have the final word on this one..? Or Paramount..?

Re: Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

Is it a live-action episode or movie?

Then no.

Re: Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

Let me put it this way: it's just as much canon as Jeri Taylor's Voyager novels.

Re: Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

Although they didn't write the scripts, Orci & Kurtzman did write the story for the comics.

The comic prequel was written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones. Orci and Kurtzman were both screenwriters on the film as well as exec producers.

So why isn't it labled "A non-canon story" instead of "Official Prequel Comic".

Re: Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

I guess it'll just have to be one of those "fan interpretation" things, kinda like The Animated Series.

I personally view it as being canon. If anything, it helps fill in some of the plot holes in the new movie.

Re: Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

Of course it's canon. It's nuTrek. None of the old rules matter. And every book, comic, calendar. scrap of paper and post in this forum are all canon from now on.

It's what the fans want

Re: Is there an official word about 'Countdown' being canon or not..??

It isn't aired, so it's not canon. Interesting, but not canon.

Agreed.

The comics are billed as "the offical prequel to the upcoming movie" on the cover of the comics.

a) No for-profit operation with a whit of sense is going to put "non-canon" on their product. They might as well put "irrelevant fluff" on the cover at that rate.
b) It will remain "official" until such time as it is more profitable to contradict/ignore it.
c) Canon is an illusion.

Merging this with the other thread. Buckle up...

Re: "Countdown" Shotdown.

For me, the only way to save this film from being hopelessly stupid is to argue for the inclusion of the deleted Rura Penthe scenes. Otherwise, we are expected to believe that Nero sulked for 25 years.

Watching the film for the first time, I had no idea that Nero's capture by the Klingons had been included at any point in the film's development. However, it is clear from watching the film as is that Nero was not sitting around doing nothing the entire 25 years. Between the attack on the Kelvin and the attack on Vulcan, he clearly picks up some scars on the right side of his head and loses the top part of his right ear.

if you read the trekmovie Q&A session, boborci says it isn't canon, only because he knows anything not on-screen can not be canon.

Countdown is canon in all but name, I'd love orci to come out and declare it canon, as he has the power to do that now, but he probably feels uncomfortable doing that
