I guess it must be hard to switch from a rifle to a phaser rifle because you have to remember not to lead your target.

I don't think we ever see a female member of starfleet in a fight, on TOS, or even holding a weapon for that matter. Unless you count Uhura in the mirror universe.

Yes, quite a few holding weapons but only Yeoman Landon using judo in the apple (as the actress was trained), Uhura fighting for Quatloos, Helen Noel showing off her legs, and Rand scratching evil Kirk.

I would have thought most Captain's Yeomen should be security trained. Since they accompany the Captain, they could double as a bodyguard but Rand and Barrows clearly flunked Security school.

And yet they had the example of Emma Peel back then in The Avengers that was a martial art expert and more often than not would get the upper hand against several men at once.

I think the trend was started by Honor Blackman because she was trained in judo. They carried it across to Diana Rigg's character when Blackman left the show.
