Could've used a yeoman

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral

When McCoy reattaches Spock's brain to his body, it would have been helpful for a yeoman to stand nearby and record the procedure visually/with a tricorder so it could be duplicated later.

What are some other places where having a yeoman present would have made sense?

In universe, they didn't have time to call a yeoman down to do the recording. As it was, they had a difficult time getting the natives to allow McCoy to even access the Teacher so he would even know the procedure. Bringing in someone to record it would have been several steps too far.

In 'The Tholian Web', a female yeoman who gets trapped in the interphase with Kirk so that he doesn't feel so lonely.

I think any landing party that was a total sausage fest could have used a yeoman.

That came out wrong.

Star Trek conditioned us to think that yeoman is strictly a woman's job. Not the most realistic aspect of the show.

For the longest time I thought she was. It was only on a rewatch that I heard her addressed as "Yeoman", and realized she had beamed down to be Kirk's tricorder-holder, so he wouldn't look like he was actually doing any work.

They made Zahra into security trained personnel in the IDW comics of the Kelvin timeline but it's ironic that the yeomen were very often not used in admin tasks. You had the records officer instead for example.

I wonder if the Records Officer is supposed to be the one in charge of assigning yeomen to their positions, and overseeing their work?

If everything is automatic, why can't Kirk wear his own tricorder and keep it in recording mode? I suppose because the yeoman needs to be able to point it in various directions to get a better recording while Kirk has his hands free for shooting.

Just give the landing party bodycams then.

Or something much more sophisticated. It's supposed to be three hundred years in the future after all.

Yes, the 23rd century version of that, whatever it is. But considering the many costume changes, it might have to be the size of a pin on your skin, a transparent patch perhaps?

Yes, something adhering to your skin the size of a mole, maybe. I always thought that Chak's camera in In The Flesh was ridiculously oversized.

I would hope that Trek yeomen are given basic training in fighting, weapons and first aid so they aren't totally helpless.

I don't think we ever see a female member of starfleet in a fight, on TOS, or even holding a weapon for that matter. Unless you count Uhura in the mirror universe.
