could'a..should'a

We have heard casting rumors of the years, whether on a STAR TREK tv show, or movie...Connery as Sybok, for example...what guest star, or casting rumor do you think would have been great had they gone through with it..

My pick? I remember a rumor that Spock was going to show up on the DS9 finale..and then it became Picard...none of which happened..

My pick would be when people were saying Linda Hamilton was going to play the captain on Voyager. Would have changed the whole tenor of the show, I think, and for a good bit better.

They were kicking around a TNG episode for Schwarzenhegger to guest-star in. Q was in it too. Shame it never came together.

DS9 always seemed to have rumored plans to bring Frakes back as Tom Riker. It's a shame that story never got on-screen resolution. Sito was often included in those rumors as well. I'm glad that didn't happen, though, since it would have utterly ruined the ending of "Lower Decks".

Tom Riker on Voyager as one of the Maquis could've worked even though I know Tom showed up on DS9 after VOY began.

I wish we would've learned more about the parasite creatures from early TNG.

From what I remember hearing the general idea of the parasites evolved into the borg. So in a way I guess they were there in spirit.

yep...I totally agree...RIKER should have been the 'insider' on Chakotay's ship, not Tuvok. In fact, I never really was that impressed with Tuvok as a character. Russ played it just fine, but his character never took off in my opinion...

But, then again, with the bad writing in the first season, they might have gutted Riker too...so maybe its a good idea he didn't get on Voyager, and become a victim or bad hacks...

I think that would have been cool. After all, the only thing we ever saw to indicate she died was a Cardassian report. If they had captured her and discovered she was a Starfleet officer, they would have never admitted to it.

Could they really afford to have Frakes on Voyager to play Tom Riker? I mean I don't know anything about how there salaries work but wouldn't Frakes get paid more because of his status in Star Trek at the time as well as doing 7 more years in Voyager. They'd have to find some way of writing him out at the earliest conveniance.

Not to mention that, since Frakes not only appeared in but directed two movies, he would have to have been written out of stretches of episodes (and yes, I realize that if he were on Voyager, he probably wouldn't have been offered the directing job, but there'd still be the movie issue in general - DS9 could say Worf was off in the Defiant on some exercises; how would they write Tom Riker out so that they could make episodes without Frakes?)

Here is the way they should have done Voyager, IMO..because this goes to the heart of the problem I had with Voyager..

They should never have destroyed Chakotay's ship. BOTH ships should have survived the pilot, and then had an 'uneasy' alliance on the return flight. Then T Riker could have been on either ship because they could have done two or three episodes centered only on one of ships...

I think it would have been really interesting to have Tom Riker on Voyager. However, I suspect the idea would have been quickly vetoed by "the suits" because, in their high estimation of the intelligence of the TV-viewing public, I'm sure they'd think the average viewer would be confused by having William Riker in the movies and Tom Riker simultaneously on Voyager.

To be blunt, I think the "suits" would actually be bang on in their assessment of the average television viewer in this case. It would have been a silly idea, and Frakes wouldn't want to have done it I'm sure. Although he was one of the cast who wanted an 8th season of TNG, signing on for another series is an entirely different prospect.

The idea of "transport duplicate" was pretty dopey to begin with - having Tom Riker on Voyager would have been a permanent reminder of this hokiness.

Back to the topic at hand, Christopher Lloyd wanted to appear in season 5 of TNG (according to Nemecek's Companion) but a slot couldn't be arranged. Kruge's descendant? An entirely new character? Either way, I think Lloyd could've been an interesting addition to any story.

I actually think SECOND CHANCES was one of TNG's better 'romantic' episode, because thats really what it was. And I thought it was written very well and the result was a completely different character that had MUCH potential.

As for the Hokeyness? I love hokey. Its about as hokey as CHRIS REEVES going back into time in the great chic flick, Somewhere in Time...I guess I'm a softie!!!

It'd touch but doable. Think back to Micheal J Fox's schedule when making BBTF, and didn't George Clooney make a bad Batman movies while still in ER?

I'm sure there are other examples, but those are the only two that come to mind.

Aside from the mentioned general viewer confusion - if that wasn't an issue and I was faced with the decision, I would go with someone fresh and new. Theres no need to have a link to the past to carry on the franchise.

I remember rumors of Will Decker from TMP making a guest appearance on Voyager. Could have been interesting.

If I remember correctly, Roger C. Carmel...i.e. 'Harry Mudd' was to make an appearance as his famed character on TNG, but he passed away before that idea was brought into fruition.

On the subject of Tom Riker, the episode Second Chances could have solved a whole lot of problems if they had gone through with the switch. Will should have seen that he's been spinning his wheels as first officer and finally accepted a command, move Data up to XO and let Thomas start earning his way back up at OPS. Also, let Thomas and Deanna have the relationship they should have had far sooner and we could still see Will as a "special guest star" every now and then.
