When I was a kid in the 70s, a pair of friends and I engaged in sessions of "cops & robbers" with "Star Trek" being the "backdrop". Kyle was always Captain Kirk, I was primarily Spock and whatever other male characters required for our "scenes" and Delphine was Uhura and every other female role. Kyle was not yet interested in girls, so he had no interest in recreating Kirk's "romantic" encounters. But I was about a year and a half older and thus I was beginning to find girls "intriguing". Yes, I had quite the crush on Delphine. Her French and Greek parentage just made her all the more fascinating to this pasty skinned boy of British ancestry. But, playing Spock, well, I believed Uhura, or any female, was off limits. I mean, as a kid, I figured Spock had no interest in the opposite gender.
So, when I saw Trek '09 and witnessed Uhura and Spock get together, I thoroughly smiled and felt a mixture of vindication and a touch of remorse. Vindicated because because it was finally "a thing", but remorse because it came 35 years too late. Back then, Kyle would have argued, "Nuh, uh! Spock doesn't like girls! And T'Pring doesn't count because she dumped Spock at the alter!"
the only time Delphine and I could play a "couple" without debate was when we reenacted "Planet of the Apes". Kyle was Taylor and Delphine and I were Zira and Cornelius. (Yeah, we were the chimps.)
(To clarify, we were too young to even consider "dating" or anything "serious", but the "role playing" gave me an excuse to remain close to Delphine. And she didn't seem to mind.)
