Could Star Trek be Re-rebooted?

I just don't have the same desire for respect the way I see it thrown around in other opinions. Respect in terms of "don't change things" has not been a lot of my Trek experience. Maybe that's colored my opinion but I'm not a huge fan of never changing and calling that respectful.

Where this didn't work, for me, was in regard to TOS. They spent 50 years telling fans, this is what this time period in the 23rd century looked like. From TMP (with the 1701 pictured) all the way to "In a Mirror, Darkly". Much of the merchandising continues to play to that angle because of the continued popularity of TOS.

I tend to think that a lot of TNG fans wouldn't have been very excited to see the 1701-D if it didn't look like the ship that they grew up with.

Well, that is a controversial opinion. Star Trek has always had a bad element to it. It's kind of the franchise's appeal, to me at least.

Part of the problem is we're always being told Star Trek's technology is the newest and most advanced of its time, and we're at a point where nobody is going to believe the 1960s aesthetic on TOS is futuristic or advanced, or even cutting edge technology. Really, I think the only reason they got away with faithfully recreating the Enterprise D on Picard was because they were acknowledging in-universe that it was old and outdated technology, even making it a plot point. If we did go back to having a new series set during TNG's TV series era (or earlier) we would be seeing a similar style update to the aesthetics and look in a similar vein to Disco and SNW updating TOS's aesthetics and look.

Someday TNG will get the SNW treatment. And those less than stellar uniforms from Season One will be the first thing to go. Fans will no doubt complain, even those that hate that design.

Because, for good or ill, they are part of the history of the franchise. They are part of the time they were created. Which is why I just treat them all as separate TV productions, none beholden to anything but whatever story they are currently telling.
