Could Chirrut Imwe have been a former temple guard??

So my nephew is a huge Star Wars fan, and we talk about stuff sometimes.
Today suggested that, based on how he fights and moves and his involvement in the Force, Chirrut might have been a Temple Guard.....

And it kinda works I think.... What do you guys think?
