is it just me or is Doctor Who going back to the Classic series?

No because it's all "Doctor Who", period.
For a while I thought I'd entered an alternate universe, one where apparently the 9th and 10th Doctors wore outlandish and colourful costumes, hence why so many people were complaining about Smith's look...apparently I'm not going mad though and Eccleston and Tennant did/do dress how I remember...
Does he really look that undwewhelming compared to a guy in a leather jacket and a guy dressed like Jarvis Cocker?

I really didn't like the costume when I first saw it, mainly because I was expecting it be in the style of Matt's own natural preference, but now I've seen a few more photos of it I've really come to appreciate it a lot more.
Really can't wait to see him in action soon.

Doesn't suit him at all, in my honest opinion. Still, if he also wore a bowtie, I guess it's more "doctor-like" then I thought. I withdraw my objections for the bowtie.
The objections for the shoes, pants and braces still stand, though.
Didn't Davison wear question-mark braces in Planet of Fire?
I'm pretty sure that most of the classic series Doctors wore them. (Maybe not Pertwee or McCoy.)

Doesn't mean braces actually look good; they're the epitome of a functional and completely non-stylish product which a lot of women abhor (and rightly so!). Just like, for example, the "garden trousers" (I have no idea what it's called in English). People usually wear those things when they have no other practical option left to them in a certain situation (certain work, or a certain body shape with certain clothing).
Besides, there are better alternatives to braces available; it's not as if we still haven't invented the belt.

I'm fairly certain the Doctor, by far, cares the least of what women think of him.
"Stupid ape" women (as he calls Humans at times)? Perhaps not. But himself? Judging how fond the 10th Doctor was of the overcoat (beyond the fact that Choplin gave it to him), he obviously cares about how he looks. And why should he not? Timelords are vain, vain creatures.
"Garden Trousers" in English are called "Overalls".
Not too hot on this costume at first glance, but as with all these things, one needs to keep an open mind until we actually see it in motion, being worn by the actor while he's in character.

Looking at those pics, it took me a while to warm to the changes, especially the new TARDIS, but I just had a thought. It looks like Moffat is going for the retro look, with the early looking TARDIS and the 2nd doctor like outfit, I think we might be about to get a lovely change of pace. The early episodes with the early doctors had a very specific look that really worked. It was good design on a bad budget, and it gave the show it's character. What we've loved and enjoyed these past few years is all of that, rebranded and revamped for the 21st century. And that's great, but we'll never be able to watch those early episodes in HD detail, and that would have wonderful to see.
By giving the design ethic a reboot, we get to see a version of that. They get to recapture the spirit of the original show in style, and I wouldn't be surprised if Moffat was going to give the character of the Doctor a retro reboot as well. Considering Moffat's love for the dark and scary, could he use whatever RTD has in store for Ten's departure seriously wound's the Doctor's spirit, and he regenerates into a fresh, youthful body, but inside is still a wounded and tired man who has just be beaten.
I'm intrigued by the pose Matt is standing in, in the photo of him standing beside the TARDIS, with his hands against his torso, fingers interlocked, head down, it strikes me as someone who's quite manic and stressed.
I think I'd enjoy quite a disturbed, dark Doctor who occasionally talked to people who weren't there. Maybe River is there, but we don't know if anyone other than the Doctor can see her.
