News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

Word on Twitter is that Italy and France, along with the United States are underreporting the death toll by a factor of approximately 4. If true, we really are facing a cataclysm of epic proportions.

And i think that the PRC under reported the coronavirus related deaths by a factor of 10.

I believe that many of the countries including my country, Singapore, are under reporting the death toil from this disease.

A Minister in a German state has killed himself over worries about the effects of the pandemic on the people in his state.

Unless it was an accident while taking a walk he did indeed throw himself in front of a train. But the reason is not yet known. He was a Minister for Finances and those have worries galore. It is rumoured that he left a letter, but so far nobody has any trustworthy information. What is known, however, is that he worked extremely hard on helping people in financial difficulties caused by the virus. He called that work "the challenge of the century". Now, if you accept a challenge, do you surrender only a few hours later? That doesn't really make sense. If things look bad, you try to get help. In this case financial help from the Federal Government was already on its way. So the situation was dire but not hopeless at all. My guess is that he had a lot of other problems and everything summed up. The sleep deprivation due to Corona must have been the last straw but I doubt it was the only cause for his suicide (if it was one - he could have taken a lonely walk to clear his head and got sucked in by the speeding train. Such accidents happen frequently.)

Good news today: the rate of new infections in Italy is falling. (Tanti auguri, cari vicini!) Unless it's only a data spike it means the quarantine finally starts to show an effect.
In my district, the virus has slowed down, too, but after only 16 days of restrictions it's too early to count statistically: it's still within the variation limit. What is visible in the statistics, though, is that the general infection rate is waaay slower than in districts or countries where the restrictions started later. Ours is a rather flat curve.

Word on Twitter?! Come on. Twitter has so many corners, you can just as easily say word on Twitter is that the Earth is flat, Leonardo DiCaprio burnt down the Amazon rainforest, and Jeff Sessions is sexy.

Dr. Birx has now said that 100k-200k deaths in the US will happen if everything is done perfectly...

Up to 10 cases in my City, most of them being travel-related. And in the province of Ontario itself, confirmed cases jump from 351 to 1706..

Chloroquine - what do we think?

I think that I'd rather get medical advice from doctors and scientists, rather than the ramblings of politicians.

Since I am not a doctor or medical scientist, I am not qualified to offer an opinion on the use of the drug. But here's what a medicinal chemist thinks:

If it does end up working, that's great. But the science does seem to be unproven at the moment. And yes, I read that the FDA did approve its use for COVID-19 treatment. Hopefully it does actually help people, and doesn't cause more harm than it helps.
